Not sure if this is ok to post here but basically i have 2 hernias and cos of where they are the specialist said i'll need surgery..

long story short, I thought it was to happen in beaumont, but I'm after getting called from a Cavan hospital asking me is next week ok for the operation?

I live in Dublin and don't drive so I asked the lady on the phone, how does it work? do i go down the day before?
(she said no i'd have to arrange accomodation somewhere nearby for the night before but i'd have to be in the hospital at 730am-booking a B&B even is outta my price range right now))
I asked her how long i'd be there 'cos the specilist said I'd be in for a day possibly two cos there's a high risk of infection with the graft they'll be using, so i've no way home from there and also no idea how long i'll be kept there & have a lot to sort out so I told her no, i can't do next week, i'd need a lot of notice to sort things out before I go.

basically i'm asking has anyone else ever encountered this? and if so can you give me a run down or tell me what i should do to get ready & sort out gettin back etc?

    thanks in advance.

I wish I could help you. I was supposed to be having a procedure in Drogheda. Got called and told I'd been outsourced and had an appointment in Sligo. Other side of the country. I turned that down and they said ok they'd sort me out with an appointment on the east coast.

Two weeks later got another call, appointment in Sligo, I said no we've been through this. Ok, then what about an appointment in Sligo? I said: I'm sorry, didn't you hear me?

At which point I was told that because I'd turned down three appointments I was being removed from the waiting list. Probably be waiting another year and a half now.

So I suppose what I'm saying is despite the awkwardness and hassle of trying to get to a hospital in Cavan, you have to try your best, because these people have zero qualms about kicking people in need off waiting lists. They'll do it in a heartbeat, no matter how bad you are.

Dreadful dilemma. I remember a friend in Donegal being sent to Galway for cancer treatment and he stayed in some kind of ??hostel?? It was radiotherapy and he did not need to be on a ward. Many hospitals have "friends" who can help with eg accommodation and maybe ask online here in the Cavan forum? google the hospital try V de Paul But yes, take the appointment. Wishing you luck..you cannot be the first thus affected.

Thanks folks. Some warmth knowing it wasn't just me. Got a fright cos they said I'd be waiting two years. Then they called and said next week I was sure it was something more serious. Hope it's not. It's not.

Told them I can't do next week so they're calling back soon. Hopefully with more heads up.

    Cheers for the advice!

Glad you are feeling better.. You are clearly talking to a pen pusher and need a welfare person at the hospital. Different departments,

Ring the social worker attached to Sligo hospital and see if they can help you.
