    focus 09 - 1.8tdci.
car started overheating yesterday. warning came up on the dash and the gauge up in the red.
I can hear the fan coming on when i turn the engine off.
Hadnt driven it since last night hoping it was a once off and after short drive same thing happening again today. also no warm air coming from heater.

I know this is a longshot, but does anyone have any ideas? and does it sound costly?

    Thanks!

Did you check how much fluid is in the radiator?

Have you enough coolant in it, it froze last night in places, did you have water in it. Are the heathers working ok? Blowing hot and cold as normal?

    Blowing cold, not hot.
Need to check the levels. House in on a rise and bloody driveway is a hill ,will need to get her on the flat to check.

You probably know already but don't open the radiator when the engine is hot.

Probably a thermostat or your out of fluid, not sure how much of a job it is in them.

Was leaking coolant. reservoir was empty, poured a litre of coolant in and still empty and the coolant was all over the ground. Some debris must have punctured a hole in something. with the local mechanic to sort out now. Hopefully nothing too expensive to fix. Any decent scrap dealers in Wicklow/Kildare/Dublin region incase i need to replace the rad or the like?

I had the rad go on my '01 BMW a couple of years back and was advised not to go with a second hand one unless very cheap and guaranteed. I ended up driving down to collect one from Micks Garage direct, with my local mechanic then fitting. Cost was reasonable enough. Link below for what I think would be your rad, but there are many areas to the coolant system, so the problem could be elsewhere.

    I'd worry.
Little to no coolant and drive with gauge in red, warning lights.

Those 1.8's are a big old style diesel lump, but still, engines hate this sort if abuse. I'd be thinking warped head from overheating.

Where is the leak? given what you previously posted, it should be easy to find.
As for price, I'm guessing around €100k. Once you give us more accurate info, we can then be more accurate with costs!

Yes there's a decent one in Kilcock. Can't remember what they're called but Google should be able to find them for you.

    Found them, www.kilcockcardismantlers.ie.

Mechanic is looking at it, thinks it might be water pump but wont know for sure until he investigates more.
Water coming out as fast as you put it in so a big hole somewhere.
    Water pumps expensive?

Jaysis, if water's coming out as quick as it's going in, it shouldn't be hard to find.

Hasn't looked at it at all by the sounds of your comment.

Says the water pump was completely shot, so replaced it and the fan belt. €290.
