ASX, Tucson, Sportage

    Hey folks,

A family member wishes to trade in the 130k km 2008 Picasso 7 seater for a new car. They have test driven the 3 above and really liked them, especially the ASX. It was better kitted out and cheaper (28500 less 6500 trade in).

I've advised against a cx5, kadgar, Rav4, kuga and Yeti aren't of interest. Anything else they should consider or points to make on the above. It'll be a long term purchase.

The ASX feels like it was designed in the 1990s, bit like the rest of the Mitsubishi range. Tucson and Sportage were only recently launched and are very well packaged. The Tucson in particular is floating out of showroom doors, I'd expect the Sportage to start selling well too now that it has arrived.

If the family member is not concerned about having the latest and greatest then the VW Tiguan is worth a look at, it's being replaced later this year but they have really kitted out the outgoing model. The only other ones are the Nissan Qashqai and Renault Kadjar which are the same underneath.

He's not a fan of the Nissan and seems to have it in his head that the kadgar is too expensive (it's not). I never thought of the VW. I'll look it up now.

Does he need alot of space? Does it have to be brand new?

The new Honda HRV has just been launched but it's a good bit smaller than all the others mentioned. It's more a rival to the Nissan Juke and Opel Mocca. The bigger CRV is pricey enough.

A Tucson or a sportage will be a better option than an asx even if they are more expensive and not as well kitted.

It'll need to move the wife and 2 kids. So does need some space.

I'm inclined to agree tbh. I do have a strange likeness for the ASX but it would have to he priced very competitively

I've always found Mitsubishi a bit on the cheap side in terms of build. The Asx is getting on a bit now too. The Tucson and Sportage are new and both look like quality machines. Everyone has different needs and different tastes but if it was my money it would be a toss up between the two koreans. The asx wouldn't be on my list tbh. :)

ASX is a bit old hat.

I've looked at both with the father and the Sportage is actually a nicer car than the Tucson. The interior feels nicer and the looks are better than the photos suggest. I'd prefer him not to buy another Korean car given the hassle he's had but he's close to ordering a 2 litre auto GSE 4x4 Sportage. Serious spec on the GSE compared to the non-Korean rivals.

I've directed him away from the ASX but I'm not sure if he has heeded my advice.

    Oh well!

Maybe he just got a bad egg?

Nah, one of the other two in the family hasn't been great either. Still not up to scratch in some areas tbh but given the rate of progress in other areas you'd kind of expect that.

Not saying Kia's are perfect but 2 people I know bought new ceed's 2 years ago and none have given any issues. They are actually delighted with them.

I know another guy who bought a new golf last year which has seen 2 new turbos in 8 months of ownership.

To be fair I wouldn't class the Sportage as being 100% Korean, as it was designed in Frankfurt by award winning German designer Peter Schreyer and built in Slovenia, so it does have some European genes in it.

I purchased a new Sportage in 2011, never had a days bother with it and is a pleasure to drive and own. The after sales service from the Kia dealer was second to none. Looking forward to picking up my new Sportage EX next week. The new model is loaded with extra kit as standard and I believe it's still great value for money.

Avoid the ASX. Owned a lancer, and wanted to trade up. Test drove for a day, and I hated it. Build quality is poor and they cheaped out big time.

Sportage is nice, but price goes up.

Ended up going with a Dacia Duster 4x4 and love it.
    Absolutely perfect for 20k new.

Lucky them, if it happens again they can push for a replacement. Sounds like something is causing it or it wasn't done right the first time. Unfortunately the newest one at home was only once returned with the same issue twice. Pity as he'd have been shot of it long ago if he'd gotten three in a row of the same thing.

    Ms

If He gets a really good deal on the ASX then maybe but otherwise he would be better to buy either the Sportage or the the Tucson. The Tucson is nice but the Sportage is much nicer inside.

What is wrong with the CX5, Rav4 and Kuga why are you advising against them? They are all good cars.

The new Honda HRV the was mentioned above has as much space as a Qushqui inside.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

He doesn't want a Rav4 or Kuga. The CX5 I love but he mainly does short enough journeys and isn't very good at lifting the bonnet to check the oil level. I've been told of too many stories about them and given his driving habits I don't think it would be a good choice. I'd buy one for me but I do regular long trips.

To balance it 2 family members have Mazdas with that diesel engine and have no issues. I just think his driving could kill it.
