Very odd sound coming from back of car

I have a 2012 Astra 1.4L and the past 2 days I have been hearing a very strange sound and it seems to be coming from the rear passenger window/roof area! The only way to describe it is like a gust of wind blowing through a shell, almost echos through the car and it seems to get louder when going from 1st to 2nd or around corners but that's the only pattern I can track, it also happens when I'm cruising in 5th as well..

I have tried turning off all the air con in case there was a filter issue, tried looking at the back wheels to see was there something stuck in it and tried to see was something rolling around the boot but I cant seem to find whats causing this sound. I'm baffled, any ideas?

    Sounds like rear wheel bearing.

jack back wheel up with front wheels chocked take off hand brake and spin the wheel by hand. if it is wheel bearing you should be able to hear noise as you spin wheel. If you in doubt you can compare to opposite side

Maybe a worn wheel bearing, though usually more of a droning low frequency noise that can be difficult to pinpoint which corner but might change when going round a left/right hand bend depending which side is gone.

one thing I forgot to say was check that all the wheel nuts are tight

Thanks guys is a rear wheel bearing issue dangerous? I don't know a massive amount about cars and was wondering is a dealer or a tyre shop the best place to get it examined and replaced?

wheel bearing isn't dangerous, when they ware they make noise so much that it will drive you mad and get very loud before it causes problem. some people have driven for thousand of miles on faulty bearings but I'm not recommending you ignore it.

I would go to a good independent mechanic first so they can check out what is actually causing the noise, as we don't know for certain.

Dealer could also tell you but generally dealers can be more expensive
Tyre shops are hit and miss
