Hey guys, I'm gonna give this a go this year :) Would love to hear people's experiences or advice? I'm thinking of starting from Ponferrada sometime in May.

Back in 2013 TG4 broadcast the 4 part Rónán ar an Camino which followed radio presenter Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí as he walked the Camino de Santiago.

TG4 are reshowing it starting next week. The first episode starts at 9:30pm on Wednesday 24th February
Rónán goes on a personal journey to find out what is the attraction of the Camino; is it religious, spiritual or personal reasons that draws thousands of people to the Camino every year?

Rónán meets an eclectic mix of colourful characters each with their own story to tell, all searching for a deeper meaning in their life. Christiano has walked 2000 miles, Wanda’s loneliness drove her from Canada to walk the Camino, Joe from Japan is walking the Camino with his two young sons after giving up his job to spend more time with his family, Deirdre from Lithuania wants God to show her what path to take in her life, the Gilligans from Ireland are celebrating 30 years of marriage and are walking the Camino with their children to celebrate.

I've done it twice, first cycled from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago, second walked from Biarritz to Santander.

Enjoyed both. Preferred the second as the northern route is quieter and more Scenic that the French way.

Few tips; 1) travel light (less than 10% of body weight), 2) get offline maps on your phone, I use maps.me on android it can be a life saver.

I've brilliant memories from it, may do it again in next year or two.

    Happy to answer any questions.

    Best of Luck.

A friend us doing the camino in June. Here is his page

I did the Camino twice and really liked it. Get some good boots and hiking socks. Pack only 10kg max. Bring lots of 5 euro notes, very handy. Also nordic walking sticks really help.

I agree with the post about by gleesonger.

It's on my to do list.

I have no idea though where to start, how long to do etc. When's the best time of year to do it?

There are directly flights from Dublin to Santander so you could walk direct from there and fly back from Santiago. (ryanair out / Airlingus back)

or you can fly to Santander and then take a bus to Oviedo and start from there or to Lyon and do 10 days.

    Lots of options. Great holiday.

Best time to walk is May/June or September. July/Aug very busy and can be too hot.

Also you can fly to Porto and Walk up the Portuguese route. 11 days.
