I'm buying my first car this weekend and haven't a clue how I get the car into my name? Do I have to send stuff off somewhere or is it once I have the logbook it's mine? Probably a stupid question but I haven't a clue.

    Thanks

Seller will add in your details on the logbook and they are then responsible to send it away for change of ownership, you then get the updated logbook in your name about 5-10 days later with your name as owner.

On the back of the logbook there's a form that you fill out.
Put in your name address and date of sale.
For a private sale both you and the old owner sign the form where it says sign and then the old owner keeps it and posts it.

Cheers but how do I know I can trust the private seller to send it off? And can I get insured on it before it's in my name?

Well you could offer to send it instead. Once it is signed, it does not matter who sends it. While you're waiting for the new reg cert, you can spend a few days getting as many insurance quotes as you can.

I suppose you can't trust the seller, but if he/she doesn't send it off you could be flying around racking up speeding fines and tolls in his or her name.

Get your insurance quotes before you buy, different cars have different loadings so insurance can vary hugely depending on the car.

Perfect thanks! But you can't get insured on a car that isn't in your name no?

You can ask them to start the policy at a set time in the future; say at the hour of the proposed meet.

I usually try and get the seller to give me a copy of the VLC after it has been signed, along with taking a copy of the bill of sale. Then if there is an issue, you have collateral to support your proof of purchase.

Yes you can. We had a thread here a little while ago where the poster bought a car and hadn't changed his insurance over because he thought he had to wait until the car was registered to him - wrong. He was stopped by the cops and was effectively caught driving with no insurance because if you own the car, you need to be able to produce a cert with that car's reg and your name on it.

As soon as you hand over the cash and the seller gives you the keys, you own the car and you need to get the insurance sorted before you drive it away. Or you could bring a friend who has a policy with 'driving other cars' cover and he/she could drive the car home for you.

If you have a good camera phone I would recommend taking a photo of the logbook (front and back) with your details on it. In any case if you are stopped by the Guards you will be able to show how recently you have bought the car.
