Can anyone make some suggestions for a trip to this area in March for 4/5 days? Flight to Malaga only booked at present. We're looking for budget accommodation and are considering Airbnb.

My adult daughter and I are travelling and would like to go to Gibraltar and Morocco when there.

We like culture, watersports, markets etc.

Would be grateful for any advice/suggestions.

    Thanks in advance

You should probably aim for Tarifa, you can do loads of watersports there and also get the ferry to Morocco, plus it's a lovely town itself. Having worked in Gibraltar I wouldn't really be bothered going there, but I guess for a few hours it's OK. March can be lovely but also cold/wet/windy, do just be prepared.

    Hi
I have read your post. Yes Malaga is a lovely city alright. I believe that you should stay in Malaga city centre and avoid the holiday resorts of marbella tormellnios etc. There is lots to see and do in Malaga such as the Cathedral Picasso Museum Altraz and Malaga castle as well as lots of bars and restaurants and shops. March is a lovely time to go as its before the tourist season so it should be nice and quiet. Yes I would also recommend getting the ferry to Gibrailtar but seeing as there is not much to do there it is best to just go for a few hours. I would highly recommend a hotel in Malaga city centre as you are near to everything.

Thanks for the replies. We're now thinking of going straight from Malaga airport to Gibraltar for one night and omitting Morocco.

Can anyone suggest the best way of getting from Malaga airport to Gibraltar and where to stay when there. Like the look of https://www.tripadvisor.ie/Hotel_Review-g187510-d231585-Reviews-Caleta_Hotel-Gibraltar.html but it's a bit pricey. Would there be a way of getting it cheaper?

Well hiring a car would be easiest, otherwise bus is about 3 hours. It's a lot cheaper to stay in Lá linea than Gibraltar and some good tapas places too. Nowhere fantastic to stay but can get a room in an hostal for 30€ or so. If you have a car I would just drive to Lá Linea, park there and go to Gib for a few hours, then go somewhere else

Have a look at the Avanza bus website. There are buses that go from the main bus terminal in Malaga to Linea de la Conception (La Linea) right on the border with Gibraltar. There is a local bus from the airport that stops at Malaga bus station. The tickets are very cheap for the distance.

Don't stay in Gibraltar, find a place in La Linea and walk across the frontier - you will then be using Euro as opposed to Sterling at awful rates if you stay in Gibraltar. Remember to BRING YOUR PASSPORTS! You won't get into Gib without them.

I'm sorry to say it but Gibraltar is a bit of a disappointment altogether. Full of scooters and lots of pollution. The only attraction to the place is to be there when a plane is taking off or landing on the runway.

If I were you I would go to Granada instead. Free tapas all over the place and an amazing place with the Alhambra etc. Not too far from Malaga, and a direct bus service from Malaga bus station. Base yourself in Malaga city, it has just had millions spent on it, it's often overlooked for the Costas, but it is fab. Great beach, nightlife, and fabulous shopping and markets etc. Really great place. It's a great transport hub too for trains and buses. You are wasting your time going to Gibraltar. OK if you were staying in Estepona or somewhere further south.

Sorry I don't mean to criticise you choices, hope you don't think I'm rude!

Thanks again for the replies. We've decided to hire a car as it's quite cheap.

We're probably going to stay in la Linea for a night rather than Gibraltar.

We're struggling to find reasonably priced accommodation in Malaga with parking. We'e only going to spend one day in the city itself - can anyone suggest somewhere else to stay for four nights? We're considering Nerja but it seems touristy.

I've been to Nerja numerous times so am probably biased but it's a gorgeous town. It can get busy with tourists but it's very different to any traditional sun resort I've ever been to. Feels like you're really in old style Spain, no high rise, no fast food chains, no big chain stores etc. It would be fairly quiet in March , unless it's Easter week in which case it's be very busy but the traditions and parades that week are brilliant to see.

The only thing is if you're going to Gibraltar , Nerja would be about 45 minutes from the airport but in the opposite direction!

If you're looking for somewhere to stay and like central locations try Puerta del Mar hotel. Brilliant location, spotless hotel, nice little buffet breakfast. Not a fancy hotel but does all the basics right.
