My contract with Virgin is just about up and due to the ongoing Netflix issues I'm going to switch.

Putting out this poll to see if there is any consensus on who is best to go with. If you are happy with the service you get from your provider just simply select them from the list of options. I'm based in Kilkenny, so only listing the providers who serve my area

Select a provider below if you're happy with their service 33 votes

    Eir

    Sky

    Vodafone

If you've been with UPC/VM for a while your phone line is likely dead so sky are off the table until youve had another provider for a year.

Depending on where you are all of those providers might only be able to offer you a measly few megs, you would do well to establish what a phone based service is likely to provide (if you have an active line its easy, if not ask a neighbour with one of the above).

Lastly, if you want TV go Sky TV+BB IF you can, makes the most sense. Eir TV is rubbish still. If you dont want TV, go vodafone, eir but cheaper.

Been with vodafone for broadband for the last 3 years . Never had any major issues . They have good customer service and the one time i had an issue it was resollved quickly . Having said that im currently moving to sky purely from a cost point of view. Sky are doijg a good deal at the moment . Sky tv with broadband and phone for 49 a month . I am happy with vodafone only moving for a better deal

It's worth considering the full cost of all the services you need when making a comparison. For example most households have at least 2 mobiles and you may find you can get a better deal by bundling these with your TV, Broadband & phone. While Vodafone may be slightly cheaper than Eir for Broadband, they are the most expensive for mobile, whereas Eir's mobile deals are very reasonable when purchased in a bundle with their TV & Broadband. Sky don't do mobile which rules them out from quad bundles. While VM do mobile, it is based on the defunct Three network without the benefit of the Vodafone roaming agreement that original Three customers had - best avoided. Anyway, you have already ruled out VM because of their Netflix problems.

what about Magnet? I've read only bad feedback here, but no recent comments on it. Dublin 6 area. They say I'm covered by Fatpipe 24mbit.

I'm going away from Virgin due to the contract change and I don't want a new long term contract.

Magnet looks like the only one with a short term contract.

Should I try them or it's better that I stick with very light usage & tethering via mobile phone (I have tesco mobile, they allow it, and for light usage the speed is fine for me, 10e, 5gb)?

I too would appreciate comments about Magnet.

They seam to be good for Netflix (which I constantly watch) and have no contract options which in light of Virgin's contract abuse is appealing to me.

As a Virgin Media user I don't have a landline but I had one years ago (with BT than) so there should be a line to re-activate.

i went with sky broadband and fone, the first week i was getting 5g download, it the went to 0.70, not skys fault as they were only renting the line, after two months of this, sky allowed me to break the contract, they also gave my my sky tv bundle for half price as a we are sorry gift, compared to eir who i was previously with, their c.s. are top class

Magnet have a no contract option, but you pay in install fee's.
    Fatpipe Fibre connection charge €50
    Router Delivery €7.99

    Magnet Packages
    Service Cost
Fatpipe Fibre 24 €41.99 per month
Fatpipe Fibre 100 Vital €49.99 per month
    Fatpipe Fibre100 €57.99 per month

Assuming a 12 month stay say, its €658 with Magnet or €660 with Vodafone excluding their new sub discount of €60. So magnet is really only cheaper on 14 months and above which nulls the "no contract". Only worth doing if you need a 6 month stint in a premises.

Additionally they still implement a 1MB/s cap on FTP for god knows what reason. Doesnt effect most, but the fact that they still do it speaks to their mentality in my eyes.

I assume, I will live for some months without internet at home... let's see if I'll live peacefully without it.

    Aren't vodafone's contracts 18 months?

    throttling FTP :'( I'd die.

Just about to order from Vodafone as they seem fairly good on price, bridgeable modem and their customer service might even be okay. It's between them and Eir, but I'm not convinced Eir have changed that much since my last dealings with them almost a decade ago. I had Magnet once upon a time too and they were really unpleasant to deal with when things went wrong.....which was all the time!

I will be beside myself if Liberty and Vodafone end up merging as is the rumour. "240p Netflix on your shiny new 1gb Siro fibre connection Sir/Madam"?
