Italy covers up nude statues for Iran leader’s visit

Italian officials keen to spare the Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, any possible offence on his visit to Rome covered up nude statues at the city’s Capitoline Museum, where Mr Rouhani and Matteo Renzi, the Italian prime minister, made a joint statement.

Photographs of Monday’s visit show both men standing near a grand equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor.

Nude statues in the vicinity were covered by large white panels.

There seems to be something wrong with the world when people cover up statues so as not to offend visitors

Hopefully they'll hide the scaffolds they hang gays and political opponents from when a western leader visits Tehran.

Ridiculous. Are they so backwards that they cannot appreciate history and art and culture?

Ah Rome have a track record, didn't the Popes have the penises removed from all the statues in the Vatican and thereabouts.

Now if he had gone to Naples and visited the museum there he could have gone to the Secret Room with all the dirty things from Pompeii. That would have raised a few eyebrows!

Teheran, despite its public image, is well-known as a fairly debauched city. This crap is a double helping of hypocrisy.

Surely panels were unnecessary when they could have just hung handkerchiefs over the knobs?

The Vatican are probably worried that they might destroy it like ISIS have done to some historical sites in Syria and Iraq.

Poor statutes, iirc a lot had the meat (marble?) hammers cut off of them before. Always getting body shamed.

I would have thought the leader of a country that carries out public hangings could live with a few nude statues!

Islam is gonna win isn't it. Europe can't even show off it's culture without fear of offending them.

The only thing to do is place large statues of penises on every street corner.

If they came to Dublin would the Floozie have to be put back into storage? And Molly Malone's boobs would surely need a cover-up.

To be fair to the Iranians they're quite different in culture and mindset to the rest of the Middle East and are getting more "liberal" by the day at the grassroots level. They're also a very young country demographically. IMH they are so far ahead of a place like Saudi Arabia, a place the West sees as a "friend".

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

One of my best mates is from Tehran, he hates the present regime but says that this thing of hanging people because they're gay or politically opposed is western propaganda.

'Compared to Saudia Arabia....' Everyone bar Isil looks good compared to Saudi Arabia
This this however is Iran's latest wheeze:

Iranian women will have their cars impounded if they drive without a hijab:

This comes on the back of Rohani refusing to dine at the Elysée presidential palace if wine is served at the table during the meal. The French to their credit took him to fook off though.

They did something similar when the president of China travelled over. They covered up Michelangelo's David incase the president got jealous of it.

Iranians are some of the nicest, smartest people you'll ever meet, and the best dancers. There is a huge disconnect in their society between the young people and the conservatives though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 716 ✭✭✭Red King

So did the Iranian president object or was it a committee of do-gooder types in Italy who imposed the censorship in case he got offended?

The latter, which wouldn't be an isolated incident, is truly more bothersome as far as I'm concerned.

And they refer to themselves as Persians, not Arabs. And to the region as Persia and not the Middle East.

Probably some truth to that. The gays are jailed and the political opponents go missing.

Was that supposed to be directed at me or a misquote? I don't think I've ever referred to my friends as arabs.

On the hangings, one of my friends said a lot of them are rebels from the conflicts on the eastern borders. Not that that makes it any better, I am opposed to the death penalty, but it did make me wonder what the truth is, especially considering the western attitudes to Iran and propaganda (they tried to blame the iranians for gassing the kurds in the 80s to protect their ally at the time Saddam, who they were essentially supplying the chemicals to)

    Keep drinking that redneck Kool-Aid.

Covering up nudity is hardly something unheard of in western civilization.

Dunno if one museum could be referred to as Europe - not that I agree with the decision, which I think is stupid and ludicrous.

So we get to make up the detailed, specific rules now do we? Statues are okay, but photographs are not? Lots of people find nude statues obscene.

They used to cover piano legs back in the day,if that's any help.
Anyway there won't be much to see in the near future ,if them bleeding taggers have their way, look at Paris, nearly every building ,statue, wall, actually any thing within arm reach is littered with graffiti (not art),layers of aerosol scribbling that skangers and scaldies think is cool art.

This is mad, is it something that he even asked for I wonder or did they just decide it off their own back as they assumed he was a combative headcase who would take offense?

I worked with some seriously devout Muslims for years and they never once had a bother with coming to work events with alcohol being served or even events held in bars. The only concession we ever made was making sure there were vegetarian options as they wouldn't eat non-Halal meat which is fair enough. I'm off to Iran in a fortnight and most Iranians and Muslims in general I've met have never had a problem being around things that are technically forbidden.

Check out the The National Jewelry Treasury, the Golestan Palace, the Jamshidieh Stone Garden, Darband & the Tehran Bazaar in Tehran.

If you're heading to Isfahan, check out the Aali Qapu Palace, Hasht Behesht Palace & Atashgah (Zoroastrian Fire Temple)

Have a great time, it's a beautiful country & the people are sound ;)
