I drive from Kerry to Dublin every week for work. I have a 08 Mondeo, it has 290k on the clock. Runs well, but I don't want to be stranded so starting to think about changing it.

I put on so many miles any car I buy, they all end up with no value at the end. what should I get...

    - Lease, most dont cover the mileage.
    - A new panel van for about 12k and a good 3 year warranty.
    - something else?

Guide me O'wise people as I'm stuck...

As you said any car you buy and put big mileage on will have very little monetary value left in it after you are done. I suppose the best thing to do is try and get the best car you can for your money, give it plenty of TLC in order to keep eating the miles.

While a panel van might sound appealing ask yourself would you be able to drive that distance every week in one? They are nowhere near as comfortable or refined as a car and a long journey in one might have you wrecked each time. Maybe a car derived van is worth looking at, still the refinement of a car but with the commercial aspects of a van. Though if you're leasing then your lease payments will still take into account the higher than normal depreciation due to your high mileage. Also alot of manufacturer's warranties have mileage limitations especially on commercial vehicles.

Mmm...sounds like, get something with 150k on it cheap and drive it up to 300k and repeat.

    That's the approach so far.

    For example...http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Fiesta/VAN-1.4-/165914326434810270/advert?channel=CARS

Personally id agree with buy something second hand for small money and run it up but id go for something more comfortable than a small van or small car.
