Channel 5 Rebrand

Looks like this will be happening very soon. Their new logo has been leaked courtesy of an eagle eyed viewer who was watching some content on Virgin Media's Tivo box and noticed there was a new logo there for Channel 5.



Not sure that I like it. At least it finally seems to be free of being in a circle all the time. Will be interesting to see if it is white or each section is a different colour, and how it animates on screen. Idents were being filmed in Scotland recently and reports that the new look should be ready "by the end of January". I imagine the new look will launch before they start showing The X Files on Feb 8th.

One wonders if the timing of a Channel 5 plan to rebrand is also an attempt by the channel to grab some viewers who may not like BBC three closing as "a linear tv channel" and moving Online only in the coming weeks! This timing is hardly a pure coincidence.

It will be very interesting if the rebrand will roll out across all the Channel 5 portfolio of tv channels. Channel 5, Channel 5+1, Channel 5+24, 5*, 5*+1, 5 USA, 5 USA+1, Spike UK in addition to their tv catch-up service DEMAND 5 too?

I think I read somewhere that holiday themed channel entitled "holiday & cruise channel" will have a new programme called "Wake Up & Cruise" going out from 08:00-09:00am daily on Channel 5+24 from February 1st next. Apparently more changes are also due to take effect on Channel 5+24 from February as well.

Also, there has been a technical change recently to Channel 5 on satellite. The HD paywalled version on a Sky-leased transponder has moved to the C5 group's own-leased transponder, sparking rumours of the HD version going free-to-air.

Yes, the new logo means that 5 USA, 5*, 5+1, 5+24 and Demand 5 will change their on screen looks/logos as well. Not sure about Spike, it is separate and looks the same as the US channel so it may stay the same.

Yes, Channel 5 HD is on Channel 5's own transponder now and it is quite likely that it will be going FTA soon. They closed down all their regions on satellite to give themselves enough space to house Channel 5 HD on their own transponder.

New 5 Star (not 5* any more) logo has been uploaded on BT TV set top boxes.

Never watch Channel 5 but its the BBC that needs an overhaul with that awful red look and feel its been going with on BBC news and BBC one. What it's meant to represent I dont know. They used to have that nice translucent globe with gold embossed lettering yonks back.. looked way better ...when they didn't even have the same computing power back then.

I feel quite strongly about this - dunno why!

Demand 5 is being renamed to My 5.

It's also been moved to the SKY Entertainment drop-down on Caria and for Airtime Sales houses. It used to be listed as "Channel 5 - NETWORK" under it's own heading.

I have a feeling that someone in TV Land has said "You know idents without the brand or minimal brand" this will eventually see the revert to the 5 logo somewhere on screen.

5USA are nice indents.

The design effect with the letter "A" in the new 5USA logo reminds me of a similar design effect with the letter "V" in the case of the ITV channel logo from around 1989 for many years. I've copied and pasted below here it to refresh some memories!

Yes, you're right, it kinda does.

The 5 USA idents are beautiful, but on DTT/satellite where they are outputted at 544x576 resolution with a crap bitrate, they aren't gonna look so nice.

The sooner they get 5 USA HD and 5 STAR HD on air the better. Hopefully it is sooner rather than later though.

Well, the new look is live across all channels.

Not sure what to think so far. The DOGs need moving for a start!

The App Store has an update for the Demand 5 app. It's now called My 5 and has the updated logo

That 5 STAR, 5 STAR+1 new on-screen logos look silly ...
Just wait until they get in on the act of adding special announcements of what's coming up on their channel in so many days time!
I am surprised how 5 USA, 5 USA+1 and Channel 5+24 look so well and not too intrusive
But 5 STAR and 5 STAR+1 seem daft on the screen.

Meanswhile Channel 5 owner, Viacom's other TV station: "SPIKE" has on-screen "dog" which appears at the top right corner of the screen unlike all of the other stations in the Channel 5 station portfolio and that "SPIKE" logo is even BIGGER!
