Qatar Airways could launch the longest flight (~18h30m)
The airline’s expansion plans include a non-stop route between Doha and Auckland which, if it takes off, will mean a flight time of 18 hours and 34 minutes for the 9,000+ mile journey. Buckle up!

Qatar Airways may be set to launch the world’s longest direct flight, after it was revealed that a non-stop route between Doha and Auckland is part of its latest expansion plans.
Should the new route go ahead, the 9,034 mile journey will take an estimated 18 hours and 34 minutes, a journey time that exceeds the current longest scheduled passenger flight – Qantas’s Dallas to Sydney route – by nearly two hours. This takes 16 hours and 55 minutes to cover a distance of 8,578 miles.

Especially considering Qatar recently announced they are reconfiguring their 777-300ER's from 9 abreast to 10 abreast in economy. Presumably they'll do the same for the 777-200LR that would operate this route

Imagine being a couple in the middle of the 6 In the 2-6-2 arrangement. 2 people you don't know to your left, 2 people you don't know to your right, and for that length of time. Would nearly prefer Ryanair style standing.

Would that have 2 or 3 flight crews?

Yes. Then reverse for the return sector.

Would one of those captains have to be in charge of the other?

On flights with dual flight crews what ever captain is flying would be in charge,On occasion my aul crowd sometimes had to use two captains ( lack of FO availability) and a FO.
Rather than having the capt and two FO as standard,I am sure it happens quiet a lot in crew control for most airlines if a crew member is ill before a flight and if they have no FO available a captain can slot in.

Under FAA rules, we have a system where the authority has to be transferred from Captain to Captain during the flight and transmitted to dispatch, so there is always a named Captain in charge.

In my present department, we don't have any First Officers, all Captains :):)

Not that it matters I suppose, but how do ye decide who sits in the left seat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,431 ✭✭✭✭smurfjed

Its done on a rotational basis for the Captain in charge.

Well would you look at that, as soon as there are murmurs of Qatar starting this route, Emirates announce they are starting it non stop with the 777-200LR. Lead time of only about a month so obviously just shoving it in the face to Qatar.

People on some other forums wondering are the ME3 literally running out of places to fly their ever expanding aircraft fleets to, being squeezed by existing bi-laterals in Europe some seem to think also..

The only thing being bitten is the money from my wallet. I can't afford an economy seat on Qatar Airways nevermind a business class one.

Spending €€€ is no guarantee. The last time I took business class there was a screaming baby in the row directly behind me.

    Sounds very officious!
We just transfer command between ourselves when one captain goes to the bunk. Technically, even in the bunk, that person remains the legal PIC.
