    Lads,

I'm thinking of buying a new car in the coming months. First time for this and first time in a salesroom as all my other cars have been bought privately.

What kind of scope do the sales lads have for giving discounts to me on a new car? Should I expect (demand?) 5% ??

Do they have capacity to throw in extra's, certain packs or upgrades etc?

I really wouldn't know where to start!

    Any thought welcome :)

that depends on so so many factors. there's no hard and fast rule.

it 100% depends on the exact model you are looking at and when you are looking at it.

looking at a popular model, in good demand, i wouldn't expect them to budge much... an unpopular car at a quiet time may have much more room to move.

will you be buying cash or with finance? will you have a trade in?

Yeah, i understand. I really just want to get an idea of what i should expect, what i should ask for etc.

Trade in possible, i'll see what they offer, against what i think i could get private.

    Buying with cash.

what is the car you might be trading in?

best advice really is be ballsy, don't be afraid to ask. mats, mud flaps, tank of fuel, all that type of thing are well within the grasp of "throw ins". discount really varies right down to the individual deal unfortunately, but plenty of people could give you a ballpark to look for on a specific car.

    2008 A5 petrol, 130km on clock.

Yeah i'd be fairly good at chancing my arm alright!

Best sell your own private, the dealers will fob you off about everyone going to diesel and offer you tiny money.

All depends on the car your buying as to the discount you get, if it's a pre reg car or one already at the dealers you will likely get best discount, possibly 3-5% at best. If your ordering a specific model and it's popular you might get no discount at all.

Im certainly not going to diesel !!

Im hoping it wont be a pre-reg car, but if they offered me 5% on a pre-reg and im still happy with the spec, i could go for it.

I went to scoda last Saturday and ge basically dropped off 1500 straight away and he then put that down in the finance application ad part of deposit in other words I just paid 865 deposit not 2300 as it normally would be deposit of 10% car was 23500 brand new 0% finance . So 15% off is a good place to start and then he wiil be negotiated to around 7 or 8 % off which is good plus trade in allowance and scrappage if they gave although scoda don't , but there is loads of ways to do it . If you need help message me. I'll be glad to help . Leatnt my lesson the hard way so I help people when I can to buy cars and what to look out for , regards

Try to have in your mind exactly what spec and options you can't live without, whether that be leather, parking sensors, cruise control...whatever. Go to the website of the manufacturer you are thinking of buying and print out the various trim level specs and pricing, you will know from this what's the book price first.
