2009 Ford Focus 1.9 Tdci - hard to get 2nd gear

I have a Ford Focus 2009 with 88k miles. I find that it is hard to get 2nd gear on it. Going from third to fourth you just have to pull back the stick. When I change from first to second it just seems to pop out of first, and then get stuck between 2nd and 4th. You have to re-engage it to get it into gear. Oddly, changing from third to second is not as bad.

Some people have said there are problems when the car is cold, but this seems to be always the case regardless of car temperature.

    Anyone seen this problem before?

The first thing I would do is check the level of the gearbox oil. There is no dipstick for this, just 2x plugs on the side of the gearbox. Just remove the top plug with a large hex/allen key and squeeze in the oild via the flexible straw that normally comes with the gearbox oil container until it leaks out.
