That's just what they did in 1916 too.

Why? Do you think we won that particular battle?

The rising didn't happen overnight. Took a few years to organise and was a bit of a disaster on the day.

All the post is sorted in Athlone these days isn't it?

Garrison town is Athlone, very hard to take over. The 'RA used to have ideas of it being the capital of a United Ireland, they were too pansy to take on the job of annexing it though.

I think the Brits are doing a good enough job of tearing apart the union themselves without us sticking our oar in. Play the long game OP.

No, the rebels would be dealing with armed police these days, not the army and they wouldn't be executed so no martyrs. Our anti-terrorism response is much more developed now than it was pre 9/11 let alone 1916. The special detectives unit would have closed down the rebels before they started.

Not sure there be much difference really. A lot of high tech tends to be useless in urban warfare or guerrilla combat. And rebels or insurgents modify their tactics and strategies to deal with a superior power.

Guerrilla war is very difficult to stop especially when the enemy looks like you, speaks like you and accounts for 10% of your homeland population...

Patriotism isn't as rife as it was 100 years. I, along with everybody I know, would not pick up a gun to fight the English if they came back over. Ironically, neither would most Celtic-supporting knackers who worship the IRA. I reckon life is a little bit more precious these days. If the original mob were leaving behind a world of pizza shops, iPhones and internet porn they probably wouldn't have taken a stand.

The British would never have had peace to rule over us. Irish nationalists who would have resisted their regime, and its mercenaries, would have constantly developed guerilla tactics that would have to have been factored into their counterinsurgency.

I'd say it's quite the opposite for me and the vast majority of people I know who wouldn't roll over like obedient dogs.

Yeah, it was really stupid. The Irish Defence forces were in no position to take on the British Army militarily.

    Here's an interesting little story:
On 28 October 1971, a major confrontation took place between British and Irish troops at a cross-border bridge between the Republic and Northern Ireland, at the village of Munnelly, between counties Fermanagh and Monaghan. A British patrol was laying explosive charges to destroy the bridge, as part of an effort to destroy bridges and roads being used by the Provisional IRA to import arms and supplies. A Garda Síochána officer stated that the bridge was at least half in the Republic, and the British commanding officer disputed this. The Irish Army then deployed a unit of soldiers armed with H&K MP5 submachine guns, and the Irish commander demanded that the British surrender their explosives. Following a 90-minute standoff, the British withdrew.

    Michael Collins over here.

I'm not an obedient dog, nor are the people I know. They're just, you know, young men with friends and family who have their entire lives ahead of them.

Dying for your country sounds very noble and all, but I wonder if the people who are brave now would retain that courage if it were to actually happen. I've got my doubts.

1,200 men run into various buildings in a city and await death.

    - The situation would probably be dealt with by the police, surrounding the various sites.
    - Cut off water, coms & power.
    - Wait.

It would cost the city a lot of money with blocks being closed down, would probably take a week to resolve, but wouldn't necessarily lead to much bloodshed.

Like every person who ever got involved in a conflict ever? Okay, cool story. I don't believe for one second they'd be all like.. 'uh, okay, wanna smoke a bowl man'? if they saw their nation being invaded.

The local scobes would have been in the GPO, armed with their camera phones and posting clips onto Facebook whilst yelling "peaceful protest".

Neither should-of the million-or-so deaths by starvation not long before the time period you've just decided was important for some reason. What's your reason for choosing 116 years? What ideological point are you trying to make?

    Just say it.

    Be honest.

Doubt it, they'd be down the road looting foot locker again. Maybe a trip to Currys too. Nothing says "I'm standing up to oppressive authorities" like a brand new 65" tv stolen from a private company.
