It's on steam early access from tomorrow, did anyone back this? If it's a reasonable price i might pick it up myself

Apparently it's been available to backers since last week

I wasn't a backer, but I've been keeping an eye on this one. Landscape: Torment was one of my favourite games

Very tempted to pick this up on Early Access, but i don't want to ruin it with an unfinished product. Even more then Pillars of Eternity, this has been something i've been looking forward to for a long time.

I'd forgotten about this one. I backed it there a year or two ago - nice one. I didn't realise we'd get early access. Must give it a download when I get home. See how it stacks against Pillars of Eternity (the only other thing I've backed on Kickstarter).

I backed it on Kickstarter and I don't get the beta. The beta is one of their "rewards" that you can choose purchase.

To be honest I'm a little disgusted by their predatory attitude with all of this stuff. You get an account and you have XP and a level, and the more you spend the more XP you get and the more 'rewards' you unlock. I got 2,000 XP for being a Kickstarter which is exactly enough to buy me a copy of the game on release - everything else is soliciting me to spend more money on digital goods and novellas etc.

They need to make a profit and all but it's all a bit crass.

I also have zero interest in playing a buggy, unfinished version of the game. I didn't realise we had fully transitioned from the world in which beta testing is a job for which you get paid, to the world in which it is a luxury for which you are expected pay.

Gimme a buzz when you've finished your game, lads.

I logged into their site and just found out the same. I obviously went for the same package you did. I'm also a little bit miffed. I backed ye two years ago lads - surely beta access isn't something that you could give as a reward?

It's not a massive deal, it's just disappointing that it requires additional purchases - something I won't be doing.

I'm guessing - cos I don't remember - that the Kickstarter had multiple tiers. We went in at the lowest one, which gives us the game. There were probably higher tiers that gave access to the beta, downloadable soundtrack, etc - which is all fine.

It's this post-kickstarter consumerism-as-an-RPG nonsense that pisses me off.

Reward Tiers are still viewable on their Kickstarter page here. Beta access kicks in at the $75 tier so it's quite a bit more than the minimum $20/25 tier.

Their reward tiers are actually pretty great from what I saw. They're specifically avoiding any unique in-game content for folk who paid more money, everyone gets the same core game at, for the spiritual successor to Planescape, a pretty fantastic price. Even looking at the additional Pledge tiers on their website, the vast majority of stuff offered is the kind of content you'd most certainly expect to pay for, if it appealed to you of course.

Hoping it turns out to be a worthy successor though, if so I'll most definitely be picking this up when it leaves Early Access. On that note, RPS did mention folk may be better off holding off for now.

it's up there now on steam, 45€ - fcuk that, not paying that much for early access

Isn't it just €45 for the game, and you get early access as well? Either way, i'll wait. Just seems like a pretty normal thing to do (these days).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,766 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

yeah, it's 45€ for the game which is currently and foreseeably in early access til later this year at least

So yeah, unoptomised, incomplete, buggy mess for 45 quid

If it had of been cheaper i would have gotten it, but that's AAA pricing and even more expensive than wasteland 2 was

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,353 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Yeah, that's fair. Was Wasteland 2 more? I vaguely remember it being around the same price and not risking the purchase (did get it at launch though).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,766 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

WL2 was 29.99 iirc - so yeah that's a massive bump in price, plus they've been fully backed on KS to at least 5mil ($dorrahs$)for T:ToN and are still accepting pledges

Wasteland 2 was released on Early Access for £34.99 which was designed to match up with the respective $55 KS reward tier according to Brian Fargo. When it came out of Early Access it was priced at £29.99/£44.99 for the Classic and Deluxe versions respectively.

Tiers and subsequent pricing are obviously considerably different this time around so it should be interesting to see what Torment launches at when it comes out of Early Access. Going by the current EA price of £30.98 on Steam I'd say we're looking at a £24.99 price tag.

They fcuked up the price on WL2 too when it was launched into early access too, iirc they lowered it to the correct values a few hours later

and i'm assuming those sterling symbols are euro's because i know for a fact i didnt pay in excess of 35 quid for WL2

Nope, definitely sterling. I pulled the prices from a couple of articles from its release and double checked with SteamDB.

You appear to have gotten yours from G2Play so it would have been cheaper than most storefronts. :)

    lol nice find :D

So, did anyone take the plunge on this yet? If so, what's it like?

Nah I shall wait till release don't see the point in buying a unfinished rpg I rarely play them again so I would hate to experience it as a unfinished buggy yokey bob

Absolutely waiting until the full thing is released, hate playing a potentially bug-ridden section of the game now then having to wait an age for the rest of it.

Beside, Torment: Numa Numa is likely going to be one of those games I'll lose myself in for a while, don't want to break it in to chunks.

While it's definitely something I'm waiting for full release for, I've absolutely no issues with Early Access, and my experience so far has definitely not been bug-ridden. Darkest Dungeon was nothing short of amazing, and so was Besiege. I think one of the dangers of buying a game in early access though is that you might exhaust your enjoyment of it before a full release.

I got Torment ToN during the Wasteland 2 kickstarter.

I really its not as text heavy as Pillars of Eternity. I love some text but Pillars was a bit off for me for some reason.

I have a ton of issues with early release. I've been burnt a few times. Castle Story, DayZ and Rust spring to mind. The worst thing is that some people think early access games are immune to criticism. If I say the game is bad, I keep getting reminded its still in alpha. So what? The game is bad in its current state and I shouldn't have paid for it. Never again.

Not only that, it's probably gonna be cheaper at full release than it is right now - kickstarter pledge prices transferred to steam just to keep the KS guys from losing their minds.. same thing happened with planetary annihilation - fcukin 90euro for early access xD

... and people paid it too!

There's nothing wrong with being text heavy - if the writing is up to standard. For all their pretensions the writing in Pillars of Eternity was dull and uninteresting, which combined with its length just turned it into a conceited quagmire. We were buried in massive walls of text that served no purpose but to give you an irrelevant story that was unconnected with the game in any way. It felt like a gang of fanfic writers decided to make their own game, and randomly cobbled together various bits and pieces they had written over the years.

Planescape wasn't good because there was lots of text, it was good because there was lots of relevant and engaging text - the exact opposite of PoE. Sure you could spend half an hour digging through Mort or Dakkon's backstory, but it revealed fascinating things about the player character, and the nature of his existence, and his relationship with his companions. It unlocked new magic and redefined the nature of your connection. It was good writing, so obviously the more of it we get the better.

The characters were far more dynamic, too: an insane, cursed fire wizard, whose magic was literally nothing but types of fire; a distrustful, spunky, Scottish half-demon thief; a loyal, though dodgy, cheeky and charming flying fracking skull, an interdimensional sword-monk full of great wisdom, shame and compassion; a vengeful animated suit of armour personifying merciless justice; an adorable robot from a robot dimension just looking for friends; a gorgeous succubus priestess from an intellectual brothel...it's just a list of relentlessly dynamic characters. I haven't gone near Planescape in half a decade and I remember all of that at the drop of a hat.

By contrast, in PoE...there was loud filthy fire priest? And creepy midwife woman. Literally the only party members that even come to mind now. That's not even touching the storyline's. PoE was just souly souly souls souls and sensing the souls and the souls are soulsy soulssss...I was ready to throw up if I heard that word again by the time I got to the end.

PoE was long-winded, Planescape was an engaging and brilliant epic. Whether Numenera is going to be like the former or the latter is anyone's guess.

I backed Torment and I agree with you on some of the writing in PoE. My concern having seen some of the early access version of Torment is that the early stages seem to be just what you are worried about, reams of text with no relation to the game other than to invite you to read the details of a dream and chose it's course to build your character. I'm worried they are going to write the sh1t out of it in an effort to mistakenly live up to the "loads of text" in Planescape. I like to call it the Del Toro affect. He got huge praise for the creature effects in Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy so much so that he "creatured the sh1t" out of hellboy 2 to it's detriment. Still I do remain optimistic for now.

Making choices in a dream to do out your starting character is a kind of novel mechanic. Certainly beats the auld character gen screen.

I admired Planescape's whole YOU ARE A FIGHTER because it's the most simple class and you better learn how to do something else if you want to do something else thing.

Still, I think Planescape might have been a little miracle and we'll never see its like again. I really hope Numenera is cool but your comments so far have me worried. It's just too easy to slip into pretension while aiming for a story-driven game.
