Flash for D3300

I would like to buy a flash for a Nikon D3300 and have looked at the Nikon DB-500 and SB-700, and there are also the Metz 52 and Yongnuo YN565EX. The latter especially is only a fraction of the price of the others. Since I don't know enough about flash, I thought someone with a similar camera could comment on what they use, whether they're satisfied with it, etc. I'm a bit biased towards the Nikon brands, assuming that they're more appropriate for the camera, although that's probably not correct.

Also, if anyone could point me towards a translation of the specs for a flash, I would be grateful - what does GN actually mean, how does it translate to how I might use it, and so on.
