Garmin Edge 500 - Crazy Max Speed

Out on a spin today my Garmin registered a max speed of 144kph!

Now I consider myself a decent enough cyclist but I'm not superman. The stretch was the long descent from Roundwood to Newtownmountkennedy and I reckon I certainly hit 80 but not 144!

Has anyone else seen this with their Garmins and is there a fix?

I also use the cadence and heart rate monitor, not sure if that has any influence on the recorded speed but I though it used the magnet on the wheel to record speed?

I've had it happen a few times but usually abroad when going through long road tunnels.

Are you GPS only or have you the speed sensor?

I gave the cadence sensor which also functions as a speed sensor I think

Could it have lost reception for a very short period and estimated a wrong speed?

I think that's exactly what happened. The issue is that is messes up your stats. Does anyone know if there's a way to stop it happening? I thought the cadence sensor picked up your speed also, is that not the case?

If it's the old style GSC-10 then it can do speed as well, but you need to have a magnet on the wheel for it, and to be in range of the speed sensor. Unfortunately this can get knocked easily, and if it does then unless you check it explicitly (either on a turbo or by spinning the wheel while not actually moving) you don't really realise it, since GPS still gives you a speed reading outdoors.

If it is the new style sensors (accelerometer type that strap to crank and wheel hub), then the speed and cadence sensors are separate, and you may have one without the other.

It's the GSC10. Magnet must have got knocked off alignment. Thanks for the tip

I had that before. It read 188 coming down off Wicklow Gap. Check your rear wheel. Is there any play in the bearings. I found with mine that I had worn bearings and as such a touch of side play in the rear wheel. When I put power down it could read 180kph as easily as 10kph when I'd likely be doing about say 50 or so. Replaced wheel bearings and gave the hub a service and haven't had a bad reading since.

Cheers laraghrider, I really hope there isn't as its a brand new bike with only 500k on the clock! It's very possible though that the receiver got knocked out of alignment slightly when I was giving it a loving spong bath :-) the shape of the stays makes it easy for the unit to move. Must give it a good tighten up with fresh cable ties.
