Kids attire for wedding - not wedding party

I'm looking for advice on whether to buy or hire suits for 4 boys for a wedding. We are guests so not part of the party and it's looking pretty pricey with the usual places (Debenhams etc) for buying 4 suits that will most likely never be worn again. I would like them well turned out for the day obviously but not sure if hiring might be an option. They are aged 14 down to 3.

I wouldn't hire suits personally if you are just guests unless it was black tie. They might be uncomfortable all day in them. I'd put them on smart trousers or jeans, clean shoes and smart shirts/ jumpers. Next usually have some nice things that might suit.

Agree with the above, though I might not go for jeans, otherwise smart casual clothes that they will be comfortable in.

Definitely not jeans, but anything smart and neat is fine

I bought a 4 piece suit from eBay for my 2 year old when we got married late last year. Was perfect for the few hours he wore it and half the price of the high street.

Personally I wouldn't rent them all suits because your kids might be uncomfortable the day and they might be dressed be better than the wedding party.
There's plenty of shops where you can pick up nice chinos/pants in and there not very expensive. I'd wear a shirt/jumper/cardigan/etc with them.

Unless they are part of the wedding party I wouldn't dress them in suits. As some one else said Next can have some really smart clothes for kids that would be great for a wedding but comfortable also.

Zara are good for smart casual look and cheaper than Next at the moment because of sterling. I just got some very cheap and good quality kids clothing on Mango sale but I don't know how much is left.

I have yet to go to a wedding where kids outside of wedding party are in formal attire.

I got lovely shirt/ waistcoat / trouser/ tie sets for kids in M&S a few years ago. They were very reasonable compared to a lot of other places and good quality. They weren't quite as formal as suits. Might be worth a look.

I got my son a pair of black trousers, they kind of looked like jeans but were actually more like a chino material and a white shirt in pennys. (Total cost <€15) Then bought red braces and a red dickie bow on ebay. Also got him a pair of red converse. He looked very well, and it all cost very little. The most expensive part were the converse and sure he got loads of wear of them. Penny's/Dunnes/Heatons all do good cheaper copies also.

M&S are having 20% off until midnight tonight. Their clothes are good quality if you did want to go the smart casual route. We got a lovely blazer from them for our nephew. Maybe something similar might fit the bill?

Could use school pants with a nice shirt

Khaki chinos and a nice shirt is a great smart preppy look.

Suits for kids is way over the top.

I don't see any harm in kids wearing new clean jeans with a smart shirt and sweater combo

Or a waistcoat shirt and jeans - and maybe a dickie bow

At least you'll get the wear of the jeans after the event.

A suit on children for me is very 1970s / 80's - dressing them up like little men looks weird to me.

Anything smart casual will do they are kids... My nephews who walked the ladies down the aisle just had kaki shorts on with a loverly shirt and matching kaki shoes looked very well..

    Defo don't go getting suits

I really don't think this would work - the state the school trousers do be in from glue and pens, food stains and just general everyday wear.

I'd rather a nice smart clean pair of jeans than school trousers for a special occasion (as long as the jeans are combined with nice clean (new?) runners and nice smart top.

From seeing my little nephews at weddings, mum and dad just had a smart pair of jeans, trainners, and a shirt with a casual waistcoat or a sweater.

Looked very well turned out, a suit would only leave them feeling uncomfortable and wanting to take it off.

Yeah I agree with other posters about not going for jeans, but anything above that would be perfectly fine.

If you get them smart chinos, shirt etc, at least this is something that they'll get more wear out of, whereas a suit probably wouldn't even fit them the next time an opportunity came around for them to wear one!
