Department seminars made mandatory?!

Before Christmas there was a series of seminars carried out by our department, (which weren't examinable) which were presented by postgraduate students. I think there was 5 or 6 in total. These seminars were during our 4th year lab projects during which we worked 9-5(ish) every day. The seminars were at 4 pm on Thursdays. In the emails that were sent out about them, at the bottom it read - 'all microbiology students MUST attend'. I thought to myself 'what a stunt of them to try and pull! and how can they possibly enforce this?'

After learning from another student that they were taking attendance (and hearing her figure that we were probably being used to make up the numbers), I thought 'that's exactly what I expected'. One student said to me, 'you should go - it was interesting'. I replied 'they always are though'. I asked her to explain to me what it was about; and she couldn't really - which is understanding, but yet it explains my point.

In an ideal world, I might have went along, but generally speaking, one can only digest so much, and if you're brain is literally fried after being in the lab, then you won't be paying attention. The funny thing is, all the other students went along... even the savvy ones. These students are paying 3 grand a year for lectures (that are examinable!) that they often don't go to, yet they do go to these silly seminars merely because attendance is being taken. Hilarious! If you treat adultolescents as kids, they'll often respond as such.

Seems like the better idea would have been to go then, no?

Especially if you'll lose marks otherwise.

I think you're just venting about not going to a mandatory seminar that you lost marks for, fried brain or not.

Like, you complain about how tired you were (hence why you didn't go), then use this other persons lack of understanding the seminar as proof that they're crap? She couldn't have been tired during them too?

You're really going to have to drop the attitude if you want to succeed with Microbiology. From what I've heard it's a pretty hard course and making up excuses isn't going to cut the biology (mustard).
