Tax, working abroad and freelance work

    Hi folks,

I have a few tax questions that I was hoping someone here could help me out with. I've gotten a lot of conflicting advice on the below topics although none were from professionals. Basically what I want to know is should I be speaking to an accountant or something (and if so, which country?), should I be speaking to Revenue or is everything fine.

I worked in Ireland for 6 months last year, paid all my tax. In January, as per usual, I requested a P21 which gave me a partial tax refund. So as far as I'm concerned, I'm up to date with my Irish tax.

I worked in Germany for 6 months of last year as well. Again, all my taxes here are paid through work so I should be fine on that front too. However, some people are telling me that I need to inform (Irish) Revenue about my full earnings for the year last year? I'm a tad confused by that as I'm resident here and that money was earned and taxed here. In fact someone told me that every year I live and work abroad I should be declaring income to Revenue???

The second issue is that I do a little bit of freelance graphic design. I have been doing that for the last 6 months. The company named I have is registered in Ireland and the work is requested by people in Ireland. So do I need to declare that in Ireland or Germany? Total earnings from this is about €1,500 over 6 months, nothing major.

If anyone could advise, or point me towards any relevant legislation or information, that would be great. I don't mind paying to talk to a professional to make sure everything is dealt with correctly but I'm not sure if that's necessary. And if it is, do I need to talk to someone in Ireland or Germany? Or should I just pop a mail to Revenue themselves outlining the above and see what they say?

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Talk to a professional here first - he should be able to tell you what exposure you have to Irish tax on your various sources of income. He will also be able to advise on your residence and ordinary status for each year.

I assume you're living in Ireland and have been for a long time -
So you're Irish resident, Irish Domiciled, etc.

You have to declare the income earned in Germany, to Irish revenue.

There is probably a double taxation treaty between Ireland and Germany so you won't have to pay tax twice.
but you need to talk to a tax adviser to sort that out.
