Poland and EU at loggerheads

Over the past month, there have been a number of news articles on how either the Polish government is breaching EU norms of governance or from another perspective re-asserting national sovereignty. For instance
    "
Is Poland still a liberal democracy — or is it reneging on its E.U. commitments to the rule of law?
    ...
This debate started Jan. 13, when the European Union (E.U.) announced that it would launch an unprecedented “preliminary assessment” of Poland’s rule of law.

The E.U.’s startling action was prompted when Poland’s newly elected conservative Law and Justice Party passed laws that put both its constitutional court and the Polish news media under closer control of the government, which critics say undermines democracy and free speech.
    " - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2016/01/21/will-the-e-u-suspend-poland-here-are-3-reasons-it-wont/

As my own specific knowledge of Poland ends with the fall of communism, I'm wondering what are people's thoughts on this or how it might impact on other events such as the UK's membership referendum?

Well yes, but restrictions on press freedom shouldn't be seen as a fight between the EU and member states. We've our own issues with bugging of journalists atm plus one in the not so distant past as well.

.....its hard to see the actions described in the OP as a reaction to the EU.

I don't know in other countries, but could any of you name a mainstream media in the politic opposition in France?

There is no one. Only few in Internet.
All the mainstream media are pro-EU, so there is no issue.

Read Noam Chomsky or see Les Nouveaux Chiens de garde (The New Watchdogs) (There are subtitles)
