Be Like Bill

...of all the inane vacuous crap that has done the rounds on Facebook, this has got to be near the top of the "worst" pile.

The original meme was...nothing. It wasn't funny, it wasn't clever, it wasn't even particularly ironic though it may have tried to pass itself off as irony. It's just a bland comment.

But for some mystifying reason it seems to have captured the imagination of Facebook users who have piled in with even less funny variations. Can anyone explain the appeal, or has anyone a genuinely funny derivative?

What memes would you rate 10/10? Or 8/8, as the case may be.

The first one I saw was based on a 'persecuted' libertarian/freeman bemoaning road speed-limits. Bill can be whatever-the-**** hobby horse you choose it to be.

Bill doesn't care if some eejits don't like him or think he is stupid for just imparting his lifelong experiences in a harmless and affable way

    Bill is smart

    Be like Bill.

Aye, it takes smugness to a previously unimagined level.

    This is Bill.

When he sees annoying tomfoolery on social media, he doesn't rant about it on Boards.ie

As a result, he does not add to Boards's reputation at the internet's Joe Duffy show, and his fellow Boardsies don't get an overwhelming urge to fart in his general direction.

    Bill is an admirable gentleman.

    Be like bill.

You must not be on Facebook all that long if it's the most inane, vacuous thing you've come across on it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,796 ✭✭✭Azalea

I notice some of the folk who champion it have themselves done the very thing it criticises. :)
Now before the "Why are you friends with them?" thing is said, I like all my friends on Facebook but that doesn't mean I always like their statuses (and I'm sure plenty of them don't like my statuses).
Boards's reputation at the internet's Joe Duffy show
    TheJournal.ie surely has that honour?

    Seriously?

It's actually pretty.... "vanilla".... as far as memes go. It's odd that something so bland, as you yourself call it, has got such a reaction from you.

The appeal of it is that it's describing things that people hate. The more that the post is Liked, the more that people are agreeing that the behaviour that's being described in the post is annoying. Kinda like the Trivial Things That Annoy You Thread.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure you knew all this already.

Can people not simply have an opinion on it? I agree with the OP - it is one of the more vacuous and inane Facebook "things".

Where did I say you're not allowed?

I am simply saying people's opinion is backed up here - the Bill thing is smug and passive-aggressive in the opinion of some.

Bill doesn't waste time posting on forums to get in arguments with random people he doesn't know. Bill doesn't act like a high horse to random strangers or in real life.
Bill goes outside his house and discusses topics with friends.

I don't know anything about 'Be like Bill', but memes in general are stupid and unfunny. I also think that the word 'meme' is stupid, although maybe that's because I know that Richard Dawkins coined it.

So you can say it's "annoying tomfoolery", but you criticise me for saying it's inane crap!

Good man...don't fall off the head of the pin you're dancing on.
You must not be on Facebook all that long if it's the most inane, vacuous thing you've come across on it.

I didn't say that. I said amongst the most inane things I have seen. Can you list a lot more inane things I have seen? Thanks.

    "Such a reaction"?

I said something was one if the lamest things I've seen on Facebook. It was hardly a visceral attack.

    How very defensive.

I wasn't disagreeing. But you made my point. It's a short list if Bull is one of the most inane vacuous things you've seen considering the tripe that's done the rounds on Facebook.

Defensive? Not really. Always amused by those posts which analyse the poster, not the topic.

Anyway, on Facebook since 2010. So have seen all the fads since then. Did I miss some really inane ones before then? Go on, list them, I'll check them out on Know Your Meme.

I wasn't analysing the poster. Merely a statement that as Facebook fads go, there have been worse. That's all really ř

    1 like = 1 prayer

1000 curses for anyone who doesnt type "amen"

The above are among the worst for me. The amount of ****e constantly how refugee / syria conflict experts ****ing really annoys me.

People on my facebook who barely worked a day in their lives and no actual college education are suddenly experts on all global affairs.
