Failed the NCT due to the above reason. I know next to nothing about cars so just looking for some advice from you wise folk. Is it much of a job to fix it? Is it pricey?

It also says I need to repeat the side slip test. On the report sheet it has the front axle highlighted. For Test readings it says 0.0km which would make it a pass. So does that mean that he didn't test it because the track rod was worn or he has to test it again because putting on a new track rod will affect the alignment?

It is a cheap fix. I did it recently on my car. The joint / track rod end was about €20 (quality part) and the replacement took me about 15 minutes.

The side slip test was completed before the tester checked the steering components. However, as the parts are due for replacement the test must be obviously repeated, as the steering / suspension geometry may be compromise as a result of the repair. Ideally you should get the tracking set up checked in a garage after the repair. If you are careful enough there is a way of fitting the new track rod ends without changing the settings. You just need to measure the position of the centre of the old joint and install the new one the same way against the steering rod.
