Shannon flooding solutions?

I saw a RTE article recently about how the dutch are solving their flooding problems. It highlighted the city of Nijmegen where another channel for the river was dug out so flood water can leave the river faster. Just looking at the maps the Killaloe to Limerick canal could provide a route for something similar for the Shannon. Does anyone know if such a project would be possible? Any other suggestions would be interesting to hear about as well.

Or dredge the shannon? A big problem is silt build up that reduces the freeboard so at times of flood the rive bursts its banks

I don't know much about the that canal you mentioned (it does show up on Google maps) but I do know I would hate to be the project engineer in charge of flood relief schemes/management.

I agree the project engineering would be a tough job. With the current government I don't see there being any such position becoming available before flooding hits the Shannon again.

Still worth discussing what could be done about the problem. A major cost of the Dutch Nijmegen scheme to give the river an extra channel for flood water looked from the TV pictures to be the extra bridges required. The small roads crossing the Killaloe to Limerick canal would probably not need bridges as big as those in Holland, if a new channel was to be constructed there.
