I was just wondering, if an item is donated to a museum by me, then I deside I want it back. Can I claim it back, or since its not on loan, is it the museums to keep?

Could you possibly instead give it to them for an agreed term or say 5 or 10 years and then take it back?

if you donate it then it becomes their property and they can do whatever they want with it

you are better off donating the use of the object rather than giving them position of it

The problem is I already donated it! :(

If its actually donated with no conditions, its theirs. Loans are the regular method of doing this where you may want something back - there are items on loan to museums that have been there for over a hundred years in some cases.

Cheers all! Its gone so  Oh will as long as they use it in a display and not hide it in the store room for ever, I will take some comfort, in them having it I guess!

If its something they aren't displaying or likely to display they may be willing to sell it / "give it back for a donation" if they've a policy against sale. Depends on what it is and the value!
