Buying contact lenses online

I have started buying dailies on line from Vision Direct as I'm fed up of monthly lenses and all the cleaning and soaking etc, but buying dailies directly from my opticians is too expensive.

I've just read a scary article saying this isn't safe, you can get sub standard lenses etc etc.

Is this just scaremongering, does anyone know?

Also, will opticians still take an appointment for contact lens check ups, even if you're getting the lenses elsewhere?

So long as you have a prescription for the lenses you are buying online and are buying the correct lenses you have been prescribed, then you will be fine.

As regards check ups, most opticians will want a copy of your prescription as the packaging is usually not sufficient as we cannot say for sure that what is in the packet is the correct lenses

I think its scaremongering. I use Vision Direct all the time and i went to specsavers recently for my checkup. I didn't tell them that I've been using Vision Direct contacts with the past 2 years (they thought I was still ordering their more expensive option instore) and they told me no issues with anything & eyes look in great condition.

Thanks for the replies. Daisy, I was thinking of still going to my old opticians for check ups, so they will have my prescription. But I wasn't sure if they only do that for customers, and would refuse if they knew I wasn't buying my lenses there.

It's scaremongering. I've been using visiondirect for about ten years at this stage to get the exact same lenses I was originally prescribed by my optician.

Your optician should be OK you going in for checkups - you're still going to be paying them after all. They might grumble a little about you buying online and maybe make some false warnings, but business is business. They can't refuse to provide your prescription, they're required by law to give you that information.

One thing I would recommend looking at are continuous wear lenses. I always get funny responses when I mention them, but these are lenses designed to be worn continuously for up to a month. Then you throw them in the bin, sleep without lenses overnight and pop in a new pair the next day.

Like you, I had a pain in my hoop taking lenses out and cleaning them every day until I realised the lenses I was buying were continuous wear. I've never looked back (pun intended). I have far less issues now with my eyes since I'm not prodding and poking at them twice a day.

If the lenses you have at the moment aren't designed for continuous wear though, I'd go to an optician before just buying different lenses.

I've bought from LensWay.co.uk and had no problems.
