If repairing, Dara of BeeCycles in Dolphin's Barn is very knowledgeable.

Sorry , I should have been more clear. I ment experience of using, like is the range of gears the same as a cassette & derailleur

The 8 sped hub gear is fine for general use on normal undulating roads, is simple clean and relatively maintenance free.
However I found that they are not ideal when significant climbing is involved. In the high range, gears 8 down to 5, the performance and feel is similar to the derailleur system. However, on significant climbs (above 6% for 2km), dropping to gear to 4 and below seemed to add a significant 'drag' not noticeable with the derailleur system. This seems to be common to Shimano and Sram hubs, and I assume is due to inefficiency added with a second stage epicyclic gear system. I haven't had the opportunity to test a (more expensive) Rohloff hub under the same conditions.
