I dont know much about cars but the check oil light is continually on so I checked my oil and found there was none there but to my dismay the light is still on. How do I get the light to go out and how do I check the oil if there is none there ?

There must be some oil there or engine would have seized - if there is no oil showing on the dipstick it must be very low .
Add a litre of oil , leave for a minute or so and then check ; continue with this until you get oil up to the proper level .
When did you last check it for oil ?

    Three litres

That means there was probably only a couple of litres at most in there, how often do you check the oil level? Very surprised it hasn't started to knock.

Is it a tdi or petrol, 1.8t by any chance?

Jesus christ....look after your car...you probably need to get it serviced if the oil was that low...when was it last serviced?
