VW Golf 04 emmissions light

Hi, have a 04 golf that the emmissions comes on and off randomly. For exaply was low and petrol the emmissions light came on, and has been on since. But in a few days will prob dissappear. any ideas as to what it might be?

Could honestly be something simple like a petrol cap not being tight enough, best off getting someone with a fault reader to get the code and check it out.
