Did it ten years ago, worked with them for a few years too. It was pretty straight forward from what I remember. Its not about trick questions, just take time and read the questions correctly. I think getting them right was more important than speed.

Thanks I'm more worried about the numerical reasoning, was practicing some online and not doing great at all.....

I didn't hear that An Post were hiring. Was there an advertisement for the position? I thought those jobs were always a bit 'who you know'.

They advertised for tempoary post clearks on their website about 2/3 months ago, that's when I sent my application in. Anyway the apptitude wasn't the hardest I've done but I ran out of time, the verbal reasoning is everyday stuff like spellings but you still need to think, I already know of a few mistakes I made.

I never ever see them advertise postman/woman jobs, which i would really like to apply for.

They might be but they can't hire unless you've at least done the test. I didn't have pull but when I joined they were really stuck for staff so maybe its reverted to old who you know way now.
Mind you in this increasingly litigious society they can't be seen to do that. Its a grand job if you're happy with your lot and you don't mind early mornings.
It really screwed with my social life though and their holiday regime really was crap.
It was great to be in there for the worst of the recession but I just wasn't job for life material.

Basic stuff, what have you done before, why did you apply, would you mind early mornings, do you mind being out in rotten weather etc? I think getting across to them that you're very settled locally is important. Being involved in local groups, sports helps. If you show that you have a personal interest in the local area then they know you'll be more inclined to stick around for the long haul.

However they are handy to work for as if you do need to move in the future they are nationwide so you might be able to move your position if a vacancy elsewhere comes up. A few people did that when I was there.

Thanks for the info. I usually get notifications of civil service recruitments but I don't think I got anything about An Post. I'll keep an eye on their website - not for me but for a relative who might be interested.

An Post isn't civil service so the jobs aren't advertised as cs jobs are.

It's a grand stable job but very little chance for any type of career progression so if you're hired as a postman tomorrow, chances are you'll still be in the same position doing the same work for the same money in 20 years time. Having said that, it's a lovely job if you're suited to it :) Another thing they ask in the interview is to name 5 services provided by An Post. Oh and I'm pretty sure they ask you nowadays if you can cycle a bike too. When I worked there, we had a casual in one year for christmas who had to be brought out into the yard and taught how to cycle like a 5 year old :D

I would have killed for that kind of job in my youth, but in those days they didn't have wimmin postmen! :D I would have loved it, as I was always a great long distance walker, and in all weathers too, loved the rain and the snow.....in those days of course.

You would have thrived, I use to say I was a professional cyclist as I got paid to keep fit. I don't know what you have made of the internal politics, it really put a damper on it for me. When the recession hit things got difficult, they had been so used to losing people that when the tide turned they really started power tripping.
I was glad to have it for the worst of the recession but by god I was glad to be finished with them.

Sorry for hijacking an old thread.

Have an interview for a post man this week. Just wondering anyone any idea what type of questions are asked no a days.
Always worked in an office environment and questions were always about being part of a team ect.
I’m guessing this wont be the case as I’ll be on me own.
Did the aptitude test few weeks back. It went well.

Where did you see the advert for the job? I'm always looking out for jobs for the young 'uns in my family and I never see An Post jobs.
