From this it looks like omnicast actually connects via HDMI and gets power via USB.

The main 'connector' plugs into the HDMI port of the tv. Plug the usb cable into a USB charger like the kind you'd have with your phone.

You need a HDMI port to connect it to the TV.

How old is your TV? Do you know the make / model?

You may need a hdmi to composite cable.

    Check the types below...

I think OP is suggesting tv has no USB to power it.

OP you will need to power the unit form a power socket using usb cable.

I'm not sure. Yes the connector is in HDMI and i have the small part of the usb connected to it but where does the other end go?

    Power source.

If you have a long enough USB lead you can plug it in to the mains.

    Something like this...

Also, here's a link to the user manual. (5.3MB pdf)

Check page 2, Connection Step 2.
    2. Turn your TV on and power
    Omnicast dongle by connecting
cable from the device to a USB port
TV or other USB power source that
at least 5V of power (not included).

    How are you connecting it?

Via android, iPhone, Windows or Mac?

The user guide I posted above has steps for each.

    Android

From Page 3 of the guide
    Operation on Android
Android users can get EZCast application for Android in Google Play or
using QR code on the main page of Omnicast dongle.
Then, enter Wi-Fi Settings to find SSID of Omnicast dongle and select
the EZCast-xxxxxxxx for connection, use the password, shown in the
upper part of user interface of Omnicast dongle.
Once you open Android EZCast, it automatically detects, if the
connection to Omnicast dongle is correct and if not, the disconnection
    sign will show up.

Here's the link to the App.
