Can I put more water into cistern to give better flush?

    Hi all.

Can I put more water into my cistern to give a better flush? Sometimes I need to flush multiple times. Would adding water into the old cistern or adding water into the toilet bowl give a stronger flush?

    Thanks.

It really depends on the current level of water, adjustment left on the filling valve and the position of the overflow outlet. Or it may be the flush valve mechanism needs adjusting.
A photo of the inside of your cistern after it has fully filled may be useful to determine how much more water you will get into it.
Realistically, you may only get an extra litre or two at the most.

You can allow the Cistern to fill up to the Cistern line and this will help a little. But if you are having problems with your flushing then the real problem is most likely with your sewer pipework being somewhat blocked.

The double arrow that points to syphon.... Follow the right arrow down to around 3" from the bottom. There will be a hole. Cover this hole over with silicone and you'll get a much better flush

Ok. What is the cistern line? Does the cistern water evaporate overtime and need to be manually topped up or does the water level remain much the same all the time?
There is no major problem -- only after some number 2s (sorry for the image).

I would have no idea on how to adjust things so to be safe, I will let things alone.
Sorry, the cistern needs a good clean. I marked the photo with a red line where the water is. Is this low level normal?

Edit: That link is broken. I cannot upload attachments at the moment. I presume there's still issues with Boards since the ddos attack.

    Edit: Link was fixed.

As an aside, I was with a plumber looking into an open manhole in the back yard trying to figure if the 12inch pipe emptying into the sewer was toilet waste or an old storm drain. We got our answer a few seconds later when a log the equivelent of a Subway Footlong slid out the pipe. I also knew exactly who it belonged to as the only human capable of passing it without injury was the beast of a man that lives a few doors up. :D

I've resorted to an external image host due to issues with Boards attachment tool. Click on image to get bigger image.

Should I add more water to the cistern to get a better flush? Note the water level [image in above post]. Would the new higher water level remain or would it soon go back to the old level?

If you were to just add more water, it would be once off.

You need to adjust the float and stick, so that it can go higher and allow more water into cistern before shutting off the water.

OP what I would do "when necessary" is take the lid off and just hold down the float until the cistern is as full as it will go without over flowing then flush away.

I've got no silicone and would be unsure on how to do it. I might stay with the as needed solution by my3cents.

Just be careful that you don't drop the lid to the cistern and smash it as they are a pain to replace.
