Is it worth the cost to upgrade for insurance?

I'm 21 with 1 years NCB and shopping around for renewal quotes, and finding the prices ridiculous. I'm starting to wonder is this because my car, a 01 golf, is now 15 years old.

Would it be worth my time upgrading to a '04 or above? Especially if more insurers follow Aviva and Allianz etc and start to load on older cars?

Would need you to share some more of your numbers to know whether it could possibly make sense.

You also need to ring insurers with your proposed new car and check premia.

Cheapest quote I got was 2000 with Asgard through Chill insurance, rest are 2500-3000. Same price if not more expensive than when I was on a learners permit with no NCB. Granted that was on a micra.

I think Golfs are loaded now insurance wise. It's down to young lads progressing from Glanzas and Civics to Boras, Passats and Golfs.

This is from a thread with a lad who works in car insurance. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=93736761&postcount=79

    It's crazy they're only 74bhp so they're sluggish and they're massively underpowered.

For example, my parents drive a 1.8 125bhp 07 mondeo and I'm funding cheaper quotes for that.

Think in the long run it might be worth upgrading so.

In terms of how the market is going these days thats not the worst price tbh. And you've probably got a cheaper quote for the mondeo because there is less risk associated with that model of car compared to your golf. It's not always about engine size and power.

It does show the importance of pricing insurance before buying a car, and also that going for good insurance prices doesn't have to mean an incredibly sluggish miserable engine.

The bit I'm personally interested in is how much of the difference is the age (Mondeo is a different make/model and younger, which aspect is driving most of the insurance difference). I find the insurance folk get a bit tired if you just ring them up with a list of registrations and say "how much would this one cost me? how about this one? and this one? ... just let me turn the page, now how about this one?" :pac::pac:

17-1800 roughly 200 or more cheaper.
