Always puzzled me since moving here from UK, why aren't dealers open both weekend days and off one day during the week??

I always figured it was a case of 'Its always been that way' much like Hairdressers being closed on Monday's. Furthermore, you can't actually sell a car on Sunday as you can't contact any bank or finance, so although you could make the deal, you'd have zero cash flow. I'd also factor in people 'out for the drive' with very little interest in buying. From my retail days, we always opened on Sunday morning to mid-afternoon but found a good deal of people were in the 'out for a drive category' and those interested would most likely come back during the week to buy. Was it worth it? Yes but just at a break even point. I'd imagine a larger dealership with more staff would be quite a strain if you didn't have a good sales flow. Finally in Ireland, you usually have to pay extra for staff on Sunday's.

I'd imagine most sales people want to see their families on a Sunday like the rest of us.

Can't say I see much sense in being open Sunday but closed Thursday myself!

I'm sure your food is lovely though :)

I work every single Saturday night until 3am, we all have our crosses...

Find it more odd the amount of dealerships that only do half-days on a Saturday. Surely this is the busiest day of the week and far more useful to be open then than a Tuesday morning...

I always found this odd too. I mean anyone that is going to buy a car is likely going to have the most time to go looking at the weekends I.e Saturday and Sunday yet lunchtime Saturday its game over for car shopping as all the dealers are closed I mean even for parts and servicing it's tricky to sometimes get in early on a Saturday to get sorted. It's a bit mad that you would nearly have to take time of work if your working Monday to Friday to be able to properly go car shopping.

I read somewhere before that research showed that car dealers actually make more sales during the week than at the weekend. Weekend visits to the car showroom tended to be more browsing or killing time rather than buying. It costs money to open showrooms at weekends so you'd want to be making a fair few sales on those days to justify it.

Cultural reasons? Back home in Italy it's like in the UK, or at least that's what I understand from the OP.

Usually, people who's got jobs buy cars, and most of them work Mon-Fri 9-18 if not on Saturday morning too. If a car dealer (or any other shop) is open only on those exact hours, it'd be impossible.

Car dealers, shopping centres, restaurants and stores in general in city centres are those that do long hours on Saturday and Sunday since families have time to go out and shop a lot. During the week, only stores for professionals do long hours (tools & hardware shops, car garages, ...). In a car dealer for example the main offices are usually always open, they do 7 days (or stay closed on Monday since nobody wants to do anything on fricking Monday, worst day of the week haha), while their garages might only do Mon-Fri for servicing.

Do workers in Ireland ask for half the day off or try to go shopping before going to work / after leaving from work?
