Windscreen smashed; Claim or get culprit to pay?

My windscreen was smashed by a young drunk the last night. Gardai called and he admitted it and he said he will pay all costs.

    What way should I proceed?

I already contacted the insurance company and they have contacted Mr. Windscreen to fix it but nothing will be done until tomorrow. I could cancel the claim and get it fixed privately and get the culprit to pay (I'd pay the bill and he will reimburse me. Garda said they'll make sure he'll pay).

Or get insurance to pay it and pay insurance back with culprits money and get 'claim' deleted? Will windscreen claim affect premium going forward?

Or get insurance to pay it and quote the costs and keep culprits money myself? (for major hassle he caused)

    Any advice appreciated
    Thanks

Windscreen claims rarely affect your NCB or premiums. Check with your insurer

Keep your insurance out of it is my advice. If he's agreed to pay and the Gardaí have said they will monitor this i'd do it that way. Pay for it yourself and get a receipt to show him what he owes you. If he doesn't pay go back to the Gardaí.

If you have windscreen cover it wont affect your claims history but it will still go down as a claim on your insurance record even if your no claims bonus isn't affected.

definitely check policy, I had a policy and thought it wouldnt affect my no claims but it would. Was v surprised at that

To many scumbags getting away with this sort of thing, make sure he pays, might think twice about doing it again!

A cash fix might be €150-€200 for a new windscreen, for an insurance claim they might put it down as €300 plus but the insurer won't be paying this amount they will have a big group discount. The claim won't harm your no claims bonus but it will be on your no claims cert for about 2 years or so and the question is asked about previous glass claims on most online quotes.

Is it an expensive windscreen like a Ford heated window or one with rain sensor for auto wipers attached that will work out more than a basic one?

Get the quote for replacement. Get him to pay and then get it fixed. I wouldn't be paying out of my own pocket.

Just a rear heated window on mazda sport hatchback. No auto wipers.

One thing is for sure he'll be coughing up some dough one way or the other.

The insurance guy I spoke to (AXA) said it won't affect my NCB or premium but they can't be trusted sometimes on the phone.

Well if windscreen claims don't affect your NCB and doesn't affect your premium then letting insurance sort it shouldn't be a big deal.

Insurance is up for renewal next month so getting cash from culprit will be put towards that (premium will be up no doubt).

Ill see what Mr. Windscreen says in the morning.
    Thanks

happened me before , get your mechanic to source a window from donedeal, adverts etc and give you a written quote ( tell him to put down an extra 50-100 quid) just for the hassle of it all happening ;)

Will the Garda not consider it fraud if your having the windscreen fixed by the insurer and getting the cash off the guy who broke it?

A windscreen claim won't affect your bonus. However, if you are unfortunate to have a 2nd or 3rd windscreen going forward, you could lose the cover. Do not have your insurer fix the windscreen and claim from the culprit, that is insurance fraud

    Good point about the fraud.

But as I said, no way culprit getting away scot-free.

I'll probably cancel the claim tomorrow then so and pay Mr. Windscreen directly

Which basically means this NCB lark is a load of tosh

I also read somewhere that insurance companys wont give people a quote if they have had 2 of the same claims in to last 5 years and the example used was windscreens

A claim on glass cover typically has no effect on the NCB you will see from your own company at the next renewal but..... it does counts as a claim as far as some companies are concerned when you look for a quote.

As to the posters who are suggesting claiming off the insurance and making yer man pay, OP will not get a receipt from the glass company if the insurance is paying.
