Hi I have an ipad, an iphone wife also has an iphone.
Any apps that are connected to any of them come up on all of them.
When my kid downloads a game on the tablet it comes up on my phone.
Same with my wifes phone. It's great she is doing kegel exercises but I don't need that app.

They must be all on the same account is there a way of separating them?

    Thanks

Just go to settings > iTunes and App Store and disable automatic downloads.

You can also log out of your shared account on the App Store. It's at the bottom of the first tab (featured). If you want your own stuff create a new ID.

The kids will need to be associated with one of the accounts of course.

Would strongly suggest looking into Apple's Family Sharing.
