Motortax.ie site down (old thread)

The motortax.ie website is down all day "Motor Tax Online is currently unavailable due to necessary site maintenance." Any way of knowing when its coming back? There's no further info or contact number on the site that I can see.
I am purchasing an untaxed car this evening, is there any other way of doing this deed quite urgently? I've printed out the above notice from the website but thats probably not going to help me if I get stopped today?

Apparently there is site maintenance going on. This stuff needs to be done time to time and is usually done on a weekend to inconvenience as few as possible.
Tbh, there is no telling when it will be available again, probably before end f tomorrow.

You can buy car today and return for it Monday evening with tax disc, or trailer it home.

If you get stopped driving car without tax the excuse "but the site was down!" is probably not going to work. Is car insured?

It'll be back at 8pm tomorrow night, apparently.

OP. You cannot tax a car until the change of ownership has been completed .

Oh dear! This is getting proper nasty now. I need a car to get to work half the country away this week. My only real option is untaxable for probably a week. Quite the worry. :( Not really sure what else I can do but risk it.

Buy the car, get a receipt to prove you just bought. What Garda is going to do you if you can prove you just bought. Let common sense prevail here. Tax it first thing Monday morning then in your local tax office.

You can't tax it until Shannon process the change of ownership

Other than that op should do as you suggest

I brought the tax book filled up and ready to go into the motor tax office recently and they changed ownership and taxed it on the spot if you the seller would let you take it..

That's handy if you can do that alright.

OP, just take a photo on your mobile of the filled-in VLC and show this if you are stopped.

No harm to have a photo of the VLC anyway......

I did that in Nutgrove when I bought my current (secondhand) car back in 2011. The dealer mislaid the registration cert. for a few days and when it eventually turned up with me (like the OP) desperate to tax it to avoid hassle from the cops and traffic wardens, he gave it to me, told me to go to Nutgrove and chance it so I did. The lady in the tax office who inspects the documents before you go to the counter to pay said it was 'irregular' (should have been posted to Shannon) but let me away with it and I walked out with a new tax disc.

Gardai can check status of a vehicle in seconds and will be able to confirm it has just been bought.

The important thing is insurance - this can also confirm recent purchase as it will have yesterday's or Monday's date on it.

Also, gardai are human and in 99% of cases very reasonable. Have reasonable proof and you'll have no issue.

Yeap I do, though took an absolute age. Cross threading it here abit but so many insurance companies blanked me I couldnt quite believe it. The car been an apparently elderly 03 mondeo seemed to be the only factor in several companies not been able to quote me. 123.ie, fbd, boi etc refused to give a quote. AXA embarrassed themselves with a figure of 1250. But eventually Allianz came thru-more or less- for me with 750. My last premium was less than 500 but i knew that they were on the up with recent insurance trends and as my last car was an Ibiza.

You'll be fine to drive it until you get the change of ownership back in the post without tax.
I got caught by an ANPR camera during the summer 3 days after buying the car and it sent the fine automatically. But I appealed it saying that I had just bought the car and the fine was withdrawn.

The vehicle will continue to show up as registered to the previous owner until Shannon have processed the change of ownership.

That is the main reason you are always advised to send away the VLC yourself when selling a car. Otherwise the car will remain in your name and all Tolls, GoSafe fines etc. will be sent to you. So the Guards have no way of knowing if the car changed hands until the change of ownership is recorded.

A lot of the Government sites seem be targeted in the past week, same as boards the week before.
