Make sure there is someone with you when you meet him. Ask him for proof of insurance before a test drive. When test driving the car don't hand him the keys until you are sitting next to him in the passenger seat. When paying for the car both of you meet at your local bank branch and lodge the money into your account over the counter. Don't hand over the log book to the buyer no matter how much he asks for it, you fill out his name and address and you post it off to Shannon.

Once he gives you the cash and signs change of ownership and you post it off to Shannon deals done.

Test drive go with him and make it clear if he breakes it he's bought it.

The dodgy part is actually someone else selling car that isn't theirs

Leave the logbook and service history out of the car for the test drive. Not having the logbook would make it that bit harder for him to sell if he decided to rob it. To be fair the buyer should look from you for proof of who you are too and that you have the right to sell the car with your brothers permission.

Good point. OP when you say the buyer sounded dodgy, what do you mean by dodgy? Apprehensive perhaps? Could be understandable from a buyer's perspective given that that you are not the registered owner of the car that you are selling. For all he knows you selling a car on behalf of your brother could be a scam too. There are as much stories out there of dodgy sellers as buyers these days. There needs to be caution from both a seller's and buyer's point of view.

Yep fair point about selling on behalf of my brother in law. Just doing him a favour as he works in US a lot and is moving there permanently. His wife is still here but too busy looking after kids to be involved in selling.

He just sounded a bit dodgy as in rough. Maybe I'm being too precious but I rang a friend to come with me. He wanted to be meet me late at night on Thursday but I didn't think it was a good idea. Just read the sticky on selling a car. Some good tips

It's odd that he is bringing cash with him for a car he has never seen, especially seeing as it's not a sub €1000 car that your selling. Are you selling it for a really low price that he thinks he's getting a bargain and needs to move quickly? It's kind of a foolish idea on his part too that he tells you he's coming with cash as you could rob him or could believe he is going to take it for asking price.

Perfect, nothing better than getting the cash straight up, no waiting for cheques to clear or bank transfers :D

As long as its all real money.
I think most people , me included , wouldnt be able to detect a counterfeit note. When there is a large amount of cash , the best you would do is count the money
