    Hi,

I completely forgot to pay my car insurance premium. Came home today to find a registered letter notice which was delivered on Wednesday. Obviously i dont have the letter but does anyone know how long you tend to have after receiving the letter to pay the insurance with one direct? Cheers.

They legally have to give you 10 days RTA cover however if you are involved in an accident during that time they may be entitled to pursue you for the money they may pay out.

How did you manage to forget to pay your premium? :P When I got a letter it stated I had a week I think to sort my crap as my previous insurer was fecking me around with my no claims letter :pac:

Stupid question admittedly but does the letter not state how long you have to pay....or is it simply a letter explaining that you are no longer a customer of one direct ?

The letter should state the day that cover will expire. BTW, paying the outstanding premium will not, on it's own, stop the cancellation process. You need to ensure that cover will be maintained. Because you didn't pay the premium, they may have decided they don't want you as a client even if you clear the arrears

Get confirmation in writing that the matter has been resolved, because an enforced cancellation by an insurer is not something you want on your record and must be disclosed to potential insurers

For your own sake you should set up a direct debit as soon as you can. There's every chance it will be fine if you pay up the outstanding amount tomorrow, anyone can make a mistake. But if you're late a second time they will either just cancel the policy or insist you pay off the entire premium there and then.

You may find it difficult to find cover now, as you'll have to declare that you've had a policy insurance cancelled by the insurer.

Noticed that question quite a lot when looking for online quotes last year. Can't say I noticed it prior to that. Is it a fairly new thing ? Anyway, I'd imagine with a cancellation for missed payments the majority of insurers would still offer cover, but only on condition of full premium paid up front.

An enforced cancellation by an insurer, for any reason, is a big red flag for insurers.
