if someone was caught with a small amount of cannabis and their mate who they were with a large amount, brought to station arrested (search, paperwork etc.) would basically giving the guards info be able to stop it going court ?, if they had kind of alluded to you that it would, not looking for advice just an answer to this hypothetical question, basically wanna know if the guards actually have the power to stop it going court once the arrest has been made.

As far as I understand it, whether you go to court or not is entirely at the guard's discretion.

A bit of brown nosing may get you off the hook but it'll be down to the amount you had,
the guard's temperament, and whether or not it's a slow day in court.

I was once caught with a minuscule amount at a music festival. I had a solicitor send a letter to the garda station appealing for leniency but heard nothing back.

I traveled to court on the day, suited and booted, and sat waiting to be called but it never happened.

I'm not sure if the guard was being lenient on my behalf or maybe he was just too embarrassed to bother the judge with such a small seizure.

It was literally the size of 2 grains of rice.

Best of luck with it anyway.

It's a ridiculous crime to be persecuted for IMO

I suspect the Garda thought the suitable punishment for such a small amount was to make you sweat and turn up for a court appointment.
