A discount on insurance for usage of a dashcam?

    Hi all,

The forum is thick with threads about the rising costs of insurance, with the relative ease of claiming for "minor" injuries being cited as one of the big causes, with claims that are possibly fraudulent being a part of that. It's got me thinking on purchasing a dashcam.

So, I'm wondering, would widespread use of dashcams be something insurers should promote? A discount of 10% (totally random figure) given on a policy, on the condition that the insured provides dashcam footage in the event on any claim on their policy.

    Thoughts, boardsies?

you might need it pointing out the rear window by the sounds of other threads :P

genuinely, i doubt they ever will offer discount for that. just like the way they don't offer discount for additional security like a certified alarm or immobiliser. where would be the sense in that.

Can't see any insurer offering a discount.

The big advantage of course is when it comes to a claim, and defending it successfully when in other times it may have gone against you.

I remember a couple of years back, reading about dashcams provided by certain insurance companies in the states, and installing them would reduce the premium. But I'm not sure it was terribly widespread. They're all going the GPS tracker route (I'm not even sure how much of a discount they give either).

This. It's a double-edged sword. Useful to protect you when you're not at fault, but a rod for your own back when you are at fault. In a civil challenge where the other party knows dashcam footage is available, then claiming the footage was conveniently deleted could swing the case against you.

In countries where insurance fraud is high, like Russia, the balance pays off for the insurer. But our level of insurance fraud isn't exceptionally high.

Dashcams are used by insurers to successfully defend claims and discounts should be given for their use.

I've come across a case where an accident happened and the TP (wrongly) was leaping up and down at the scene, accusing our driver of all sorts, until he quietly pointed to his camera. You should have seen the look on his face. I'd love to share it but I can't

This country would probably class it as a modification
