There was a fire in my apartment block and I can no longer stay there for the better part of a week. 40ish people. Wonder if anybody else went through this and how the landlord/estate agents handled it?

Not complaining about our treatment (in hotel atm), just like to see what happened with other people if they had to leave their accommodation.

Hi Tar, I would imagine it will be more than a week before your block is habitable again. If it was a proper fire which I believe it was as I read your post on another forum the smell of smoke will take agrees to get rid of and all your clothes etc will have to be thrown out.
Hopefully I'm wrong and things aren't as bad as they seem to be from reading about the fire.
Also I hope your cats are ok.

Yeah the smoke smell is overpowering. Throwing clothes out would be a disaster! Cats all good thank you, friend ran out through the fire like a badass with her. Think other apartments hadit worse than mine.

I imagine it's insurance taking care of people in cases like this, seems cripplingly expensive to put people up, repair, hire 24 hour security etc.

My landlord insurance covers my tenants relocation in the case of accidents. I will try check how long for.

I know a local business beside me had a really smokey chemical fire(hairdresser). They got specialist after fire cleaners the next day in and within 2 days they were back open. The thing with smoke is that it can linger for years. I have gotten into cars that stink of smoke and the owner quit years ago. The smell of smoke doesnt just go over time. It needs to be cleaned out of things

OP I suggest you ask the landlord to have the furnishings professionally cleaned ie carpets, sofas, curtains etc. The smell might wash out of your clothes with dry cleaning

As expected my stay has been extended, even worse the security guard was arrested for stealing from the apartments (seems to just be, women's underwear so far but I don't know). Another tenant told me, not the estate agents? One that's weird that they haven't told people, second its odd as they must have given my number out to other tenants.
