Police in Vietnam refuse to give Police Report

While on holiday in Vietnam over Christmas, my partner had his bag stolen while crossing a very busy intersection. It contained an expensive camera, as well as cash. We reported the incident to the Police in Vietnam and obtained the report number. We were leaving the city the next day so the hotel assured us that they would chase the police report down for us (for insurance).

Since then, both our travel agent and hotel have tried to get the report. The police are not cooperating. Apparently it's quite common for travel agents to give them a "gift" to help proceedings along but even that didn't work. This morning I received an email from the hotel stating that the police will not cooperate. They also gave me the address and telephone number of the station we reported it to.

Any advice on what I can do from this side of the world?

Ring your insurance company and see what they say - possibly the report no and the email from the hotel etc might suffice considering the circumstances.

Very much doubt ringing the station will help one iota.

Could you not escalate it with their police? I suspect I am being completely naive .

We have an embassy in Hanoi. Might be worth a call to DFA.
