Samsung smart TV deleted data from USB!!

I plugged in a hard drive using a usb cable into the back of my Samsung smart tv and recorded a program onto it. When I went into watch it I noticed that everything else on the hard drive had be erased. Anyone ever come across this? Any suggestions how to retrieve the data?

I would think that the TV reformatted the USB device.
