Suspending power cable between buildings

    Hi all,
I'm putting a shipping container about 30m away from my house and want to run power and network cable to it from the house.

I'm ruling out running underground, so looking for some guidance on best way to safely suspend the cable.

The cable would be coming from gable end, so plenty of height, and have an option then run along hedge line, and/or suspend via tree to keep from dropping/sagging.

I don't like the idea of having the cables under tension, so looking for feedback o ways to do this safely.

    Thanks,
    Tom

Usual practice is to string up a catenary wire between 2 points and fix your cables to this using insulating tape or cable ties. If you can tension the catenary wire using turnbuckles all the better as it will reduce the spans tendency to sway in the wind. Steel wire rope is the best option. 3-4 mm diameter would be adequate. A good hardware store should have all you need. 4 wire rope clips toform the 2 end loops and 1or2 turnbuckles to tension and a length of wire rope. If you have 2 solid anchor points you're sorted

You could put a pole at the container too, it would get the cable up out of the way

be handy anyway for a light, camera etc

Steel wire hanger as foxy said is the best bet - just make sure you leave a 6 inch loop either end on the electric cable to allow for temperature expansion. semi tight cable ties every meter to secure it.

I would advise to steer clear of any trees when suspending cables. They are not good anchor points for obvious reasons. Alternatives I have seen are a long scaffold bar sunk in concrete or bolted to one corner of the container to give you height or begging a pole of the ESB and placing that in the spot you need.

Appropriate electricity cable is a must too, no 2.5mm 3 core.

    TT

What calculations did you use to decide 2.5 was the correct size?
