Garage Courtsey Car and Insurance

My car broke down in Dec. It is under warranty and garage are fixing the issue. The warranty was 5 years and after 3 years the manufacturer outsourced to a different underwriter so the main dealer who has my car had to fill out paper work to confirm cover. Thankfully all is bring covered as it is extensive mechanical failure. This paperwork etc took 2 weeks to get confirmation of cover, then Xmas happened so further delay and now the main dealers are waiting on parts. So I am now 4 weeks without my car and have garage courtsey car in the interim.
Problem I have is with my insurance. I rang my insurer to transfer over my cover to garage car in Dec. No problems and no extra cost but they said temporary substitution can only be done 2 weeks at a time so to ring back after 2 weeks. Rang back and they extended for another 2 weeks. However that 2 weeks ended this morning and I rang back again because obviously I still have the garage car and they said max cover for temporary vehicle is 28 days so they couldn't extend. I explained my case and a lovely customer service representative checked with a manager and they agreed to give me a week extra as a gesture of goodwill but said they will give me no more. I asked can I pay for extra time and they said no.
I rang garage and they can't guarantee car will be ready by next Thursday as they are still waiting on a part. I explained re insurance issues and the girl said it was unusual

Anybody know what I should do.if by next week it looks likely that I won't have my own car back???

If you have driving other cars on your current insurance and the garage let you drive their car third party (unlikely) you wouldn't need to switch over any cover. Perhaps they have some relative junker they can lend you that they would be ok having third party only cover on?

Would the garage cover the cost of a rental car? they cover the rental fee, you cover the insurance fee?

Any time I have got a courtesy car from a garage I have just driven it using my third party cover for driving vehicles belonging to someone else.

Don't know if this is right or wrong but what I'm saying is OP that you're probably worrying about something that most people don't. Or maybe I'm way out? 😊

+1 Most garages have a few old models that they rent out as 'replacement cars' where the renter provides the insurance but if you're getting the car on a free loan, it will be covered by your own insurance under the 'driving other cars' cover if you have it.

Ya I was wondering could I just drive away under third party until my own car is ready. I am just worried about liability if anything happens the garage car as it's a 141. On day 1 the garage insisted I transfer over my insurance.
I'll ring them again tomorrow and see if there is any options
    Thanks a million

It's the start of January I'm sure that they have plenty of junkers taken in on part exchange or could easily enough source one from whoever they move the cars that they don't want to stock on to.

OP was it 28 days max for temporary transfer or 28 days per car?

+1 Yes it's perfectly natural that they want full cover for a 141 but ask them if they have a 'replacement car' and see if they will accept your 'driving other cars' cover on it. As long as you don't pay to rent the car, you will be covered but for third party only.
