Question in relation to Mri scans

    Hi,

I'm having a chronic issue around my right hip which physio & Fascial stretching haven't helped. I am thinking of going for an Mri to see what's going on there. How do I go about this. I know you can go to a private clinic & have one done but who do I get to look at the scan & give me an opinion. Should I go to my doctor or to a specialist. Anyone done this who could shed some light?

    Thanks.

I think you will need a referral from your GP, unless you attend A&E and have it requested there. It's not technically an A&E issue though I take it.

I had an issue myself sometime ago that I went to my GP about and requested a referral for an MRI, covered by my insurance.

I also got a referral from a GP.
As has already been said, not sure you can just walk in off the street and get one.

To have a scan carried out, you'll need a referral letter from a medical practitioner, usually your GP or a hospital doctor. If you're going privately and want to make sure it's covered by your health insurance, check which scan centres they cover and what medical reasons they recognise for a scan

Some private companies have arrangements with GPs so your GP may be able to fax or email your details and arrange a next day appointment. You just turn up with your body part and health insurance details or payment.

Also depends on the scan centre - e.g. VHI require consultant referral for scans in the Blackrock clinic etc - best off ringing your insurer in advance.

If you have no insurance a scan is only about €180 in most places so it won't necessarily break the bank.

Thanks for the replies. Off to the doctor first so.

That is correct, a referral from a doctor is needed or else they wont grant request for mri. Anyway, I hope you're well now.
