BBC News is reporting that he had been ill with cancer. I met him a few years ago at UCD, we talked about how he had enjoyed directing The Winter Guest. :(

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

―Oscar Wilde predicting Social Media, in The Picture of Dorian Gray

Don't think you'd find an actor who'd bring the same level of pride, enthusiasm and talent to what many others would treat as potentially thankless genre roles.

RIP Hans Gruber. You're the reason I maintain a Filofax.

    Horrible news.
I was dragged along to the Harry Potter series, but he was fantastic in the later movies, "Always".

RIP Alan Rickman. Saw him on stage at the Abbey in the play "John Gabriel Borkman" a few years ago, fantastic actor and a very humble man. Sadly missed, died aged 69, same age as Bowie :(

Didn't he once say "I don't play villains, I play interesting characters"

Bad news. An actor you were always happy to see, even when he was playing nasty pieces of work.... especially when he was playing nasty pieces of work.

"You see; it makes no difference."

There was more to him than that of course, a lot more. He was great in Truly, Madly, Deeply. He also made a better fist of playing an Irishman than Johnathan Rhys Myers.

    RIP

Loved his performances in Love Actually and Die Hard but he'll always be known in our house as Severus Snape. He treated that role with a lot of respect and put everything into it.

I'm really hating this fcuking week.

RIP. He was by all accounts a fantastic character actor & as said already, elevated scenes and scripts simply by his effortless enthusiasm and charisma. He was one of those actors who commanded the screen and the viewers attention, whether it be with an expression or through his recognisable voice.

First Bowie, now Rickman. F*ck you, cancer.

    So sad:(

I just heard that on the news a while ago, saddened at that as he certainly commanded the screen whenever he was on it, as kids will remember him as Severus Snape & adults will remember him fondly as Hans Gruber.

He was married into an acting dynasty & afaik was on the LLS a good while ago & had just finished renovating his castle :(

Another good person gone too soon to Cancer!

I'm gutted. :( I was the tender age of 14 when I first saw him acting, he was the wickedly captivating Sheriff of Nottingham. Something about him and his performance hooked me utterly and I've loved him ever since. RIP Alan. You'll be sorely missed. :(

What a loss to the world of theatre and film. He was one of my favourites. 69 is so young too when you think about it.

Does seem young alright. When I heard, his turn in Dogma was the first thing that popped into my head!

This has really taken the wind out of my sails.

Watch Die Hard in the cinema at Christmas, he was pure magic as Gruber and he made the film that extra bit special.

    "Hans...BUBBY"

    Rest in peace, good sir.

Very sad news. A class actor and also a really nice person by the sounds of things.

I hope you're sitting on that beach Hans, earning twenty percent.

I was completely surprised and deflated when I heard about this. He's one of my favourite actors. He quetly and confidently stole the show on anything I've seen him in. Even oddball roles like the alien in Galaxy Quest with limited scope still allowed him to shine. I don't think the man knew the meaning of 'phoning it in' and it was that quality I loved about him. You could alwasy watch any movie in which he was cast sure in the knowledge that you were in for some serious quality. Maybe he was lucky or maybe it was partly intentional but he always seemed to take on roles surrounded by a high quality cast and a good script. Maybe that's a sign of a man who put his art before his paycheck, though in his case, he seems to have managed to achieve both admirably.

I rewatched Die Hard last night. It was long overdue. All those years ago when I saw it first, my impression was that it was a great movie with the guy from Moonlighting and an extremely memorable theif. That was the first time I saw Alan Rickman on screen. He stood out even then and in the intervening years his stature has only grown. For me, and I'm likely very biased, he absolutely stole the show on Harry Potter. Granted those weren't my sort of films but I believe he absolutely shone!

RIP. It's been a bad week. This is a loss we'll feel for a while yet.

Not surprised Emma Watson used his passing to ram feminism down our throats again. Silly little girl has no sense of decorum.
