Crashed car - what will my new premium look like?

Hi - I crashed my car before Christmas during the storms. I was on my own, lost control, clipped a pole and ended up on my side. I was fine, no other cars involved and noone else in my car. The car was a write off. I had it valued at 5k, and received 4.5k in my claim. My policy has step back protection. I've been driving for over 15 years and never had a claim. I am 39. My insurance cost 400 euro when i renewed in September 2015 - any idea what it will rise to now? I am doing the car search right now so want to factor in the increased insurance cost. Thanks a mill.

That's unlucky, thankfully you or noone else was hurt.

As for the insurance it's impossible to say what it'll be, either a bit higher or then a lot higher (very scientific I know!), all you can do is shop around and call as many brokers as possible and pick the best one for you. As has been said on many threads lately, there is no way of knowing until you actually ask for a quote.

    Good luck!

hard to say really, but honestly i reckon it will at least double, premiums were going up anyway and people paying €400 last year have been getting renewals of close to €800 this year, before the mention of a claim.

my real gut tells me you were probably better going to the credit union for a €4500 personal loan than actually claiming for this.

RTÉ saying insurance is up over 30% in 12 months so your likely looking at that anyway...
The cost of car insurance increased by 31.1% in the year to December, according the latest Consumer Price Index from the CSO.

If you were on max (50%) NCB before the accident, that means your base premium was €800. You will probably be stepped back to 20%, meaning your new premium would normally be €640.

I don't think a claim of that size would attract a claims load, but you can be certain that the base rate will increase significantly along with current market conditions. Most alternative insurers won't offer a quote for a couple of years for claims over €3k
